u-joint
Hello,
I would like to know which u-joint is strongest; Spicer greaseable 1310/1350 u-joint or the same conversion joint but a Strange (non-greaseable) If I change an np208 to an np205 on a Chevy how would I do it if I do not find the stock shifter and the rubber boot covering the floor to the transfer case? Can I use the stock boot with some modification? Do I have to change the transmission support beam to a "W" kind found on 85-91 models or can I modify the stock 208 support beam? I am new to all this so I appreciate all help. |

Hi
The u-joint your asking about must be the 1/2 ton driveshaft to 1 ton rear end? If so i have used both the Spicer and Strange. The Strange sealed joint only survived for 2 years for about 4000 miles. Then i replaced it with the Spicer greaseable and it's been in service for 5 years and 15,000 miles. I run all greaseable. An NP205 shifter, boot, and boot ring can be found in most 4x4 warehouses. Maybe a salvage yard trip? The crossmembers are different between the 208 and 205 but i don't remember exactly how. What year truck do you have and what trans? I would think if a guy had the 205 mount in hand they could figure what mods to make, or keep that crossmember in mind for the salvage yard trip. Thanks for the reply! Well it is crystal clear then, Spicer is far stronger like I thought it might be. I have been to places like Pepboys, Autozone, Advance auto parts and Napa for the boot and shifter but none had anything. Wreckers I have been to also are short of it if they even know what a np205 case is. I loved the link, I will call them on Monday, because I am also looking for a front drive shaft for the np 205/th400 combo. They might have one in stock. There has been a th400/np208 with a tall adapter in the truck, so I guess I can build a distance bracket for the np 205 that I want to use. It has the short style adapter for the mount. For your drive shaft needs you may want to chum up to your local machine shop as shipping a driveshaft for you may be costlier than modifying the one you have.
