72 c10 ls swap
I have a 4.8 with a 700r4 in my truck. Having issues with kickdown cable loosing up when out for a spirited drive. I want to consider electronic controlled transmission. Its a low hump truck...whats easiest upgrade that will fit my truck without cutting floor?

I'm not an expert but if a 700R4 will fit isn't a 4L60E dimensionally very close? I could see a problem with 4L80E, but I would think that a 4L60E would be bolt in and fit the floor.

4l60 aka 700R4 are the same length as 4l60E's up to 2001. After that they are 3/4" longer.
4L60E were manufactured after 1993. The difference, between the 1993 to 2001 and the later versions, is the torque converters are larger 300mm vers 298mm. The earlier 298mm transmission can be installed behind the 4l60E but sometimes requires a different flex plate. It depends on the LS motor installed. All 700R4's/4L60E's will fit in a low or high hump C10. |

4L80E fit right in my low hump 1971. I have 2 friends that have blown up 4L60Es with stock engines and I had no desire to do everything twice.

Had a '95 Suburban with 350/4L60E that was at 212K when we sold it with never a problem. It pulled a lot of trailers too. Had an '01 Tahoe that went 299K on the 5.3/4L60E again lots of towing and never a problem. In fact at about 250K the radiator cracked and the replacement had a weeping oil cooler line fitting. It parked on grass and I didn't see the leak. One day it was slipping bad. Fluid was low and black and did not smell nice. I fixed the leak and changed the filter thinking it was done but it went another almost 50K with no issues until 4th gear died. Put a GM reman in it and it sold at 330K. Then an '07 Tahoe with 5.3 that has at least 220K now that I gave to my son. Yes towing. No issues. The only one I had that really gave trouble was a '97 4.3 Blazer. It died at around 130K. I have known of others with the Blazers that had early issues too. I'm not sure you can control a 4L80E with a 4.8 stock computer anyway?

One nice thing with the 4L60E is the ability to tune the shift points with the stroke of a few computer keys.
Not knowing the 4.8 age but if its a 24 tooth crank engine you only need one ECM for engine and trans control. |
