Another T221 question...

My Rockwell is leaking like a stuck pig from what I suspect is the out put shaft to the rear drive line.

I found the replacement seal at napa.

Question: Am I going to need any special tools to R&R this seal?

I am concerned about getting the yoke off of the output shaft, and then getting it back to a fully seated position on the shaft. Or, will this yoke slide off and on with out to much effort?

Re: Another T221 question...

I'll be watching this one closely too. I'm gonna try doing mine this weekend if I get the info. I'm wondering if there is a crush sleeve like the Dana 60 or is there just a torque setting?

My Rockwell leaks from the same place, so I could use some info on this too!

Re: Another T221 question...

Hi. I did my seals recently. Got them from RockAuto. Just had to remove the driveshafts, and then the yokes from the transfer case. The nuts are 1&5/16". Pulled the seals out with a seal puller. Installed new ones with a lot of permatex, cleaned up the yokes and re-installed. Did not take that long. My case still leaks from the bearing retainers though. I think I need to drain it, disassemble, and re-assemble with permatex.

How much trouble was it to get the yoke on and off?
Any special tool involved?

I just picked up my seal from Napa, and plan to replace mine this weekend.

I wish I could find a good assembly manual on the T221... So I am just guessing at all this, figuring that a tail shaft seal shouldn't be a big deal. I just don't want to be surprised with needing something special, once I have the drive line a tore down and can't move the truck.

Here are pictures from a 8 page overhall manual for the rockwell 221 that I have. Hope it helps.

Awesome! Thank you for sharing that.

Is your book a mouldy oldie, or do you think its one that can be found new?

Thanks!

Re: Another T221 question...

Its just an 8 page phamplet type booklet that somebody photo copied for me. I have one for the NP205 as well as the SM465.

I used an electric impact wrench to break the nut loose. It didn't seem that tight. I used a puller to get the yoke off. I have a puller made for yokes, but any gear puller or crank pulley puller where you can put bolts through the u-bolt holes on the yoke and pull off the shaft should work.

You might be able to tap it off with a small hammer. However - I pulled the yoke off my trans at the same time, and I noticed the yoke was bent. This causes the u-joint to wear and fail prematurely. I don't know how anyone could bend this, as it seems so solid, but...

I replaced the u-joints and u-bolts at the same time. I think it is a good idea while you have things apart. Once, a long time ago, I had a u-bolt break, and the driveshaft broke and flew out while driving. It was a re-used u-bolt.

Here is a link to the manual:

http://www.persh.org/images/65Pickup/T221%5B1%5D.pdf

It talks about removing the bearing cover to remove the seal. I did not do this, I pulled and re-installed the seal on the truck. Only had to remove the yoke.

Also, you need to have something suitible to drive in the new seal. I was using 2 or 3" PVC pipe fittings.

Lastly, my input shaft had two seals on it. I have seen this done before to combat leaks. I did not replace two, only one, but drove it in more than flush. My point is, there is a lot of room to situate the input shaft seal.

Oh - and I bought two seals in case I screwed one up.

Re: Another T221 question...

I just did the input on mine. Broke the nut off with 1/2" air impact - it came off easily. My Chilton just happened to have info on the T223 which I guessed would have the same torque values. 200-400 ft.lbs. on the nut. I just hit it with the impact again until it didn't move. As for getting the yoke off I used a ball peen and alternated sides with light tapping, again it came off real easily. Gonna try to do the shift shaft seals this week too. Would be real nice to have a vehicle that didn't leak!

Re: Another T221 question...

Cleaned up the oil mess today, and I have the new seal to go in tomorrow morning. I plan to hopefully knock this out pretty quick, since it is sounding as straight forward as I thought.
Just wanted to make sure there were no surprises, since I didn't have good documentation and typically I stay away from trans related stuff.

Thanks for all the input

I would very much like a link to both of those, if possible!

Re: Another T221 question...

I just finished doing the seal R&R.

Didn't need a puller for the yoke, is came off and went back on easy.
Had to loosen the carrier bearing.
Whole job took me about two hours, since I drained/filled, and cleaned everything.

It would be great of there could be a FAQ on T221 stuff like this, since I am sure this is a tired subject to discuss.
