questions about front disc swap on 70 c10

ok i got a 1970 c10 that i bought at the end of last summer off of a good friend of mine that just wanted it out of his yard and was going to junk it so i gave him 200 for it and its not that bad. i want to put front disc on it but i know there has to be a way to use factory parts. cam i use the front control arms from a 73-87 c10 cause my lowers are shot so they need replaced any how and i was just going to get every thing of the front suspension off the 73-87 and the master and prop valve also. will this all work

I'm not real familiar with the '73 and up trucks but as long as you take everything, spindles, control arms and steering linkage, you'll be in good shape.

Re: questions about front disc swap on 70 c10

ok i just didnt want to go to the junk yard and buy all the front end parts if it wasnt gonna work. so my next question is for front drop springs would i use 67-72 or 73-87 or are they the same. cause i would assume that the 71-87 c10 would have nearly identical front suspension componants

You can use the complete front suspension.Either take the whole crossmember and swap it(this requires drilling a couple of holes out) or swap from the control arm shafts out.Use the later tie-rod ends and center link and if it has PS you might as wll upgrade that while you're there.

Re: questions about front disc swap on 70 c10

so my best bet is to just get a front stub cut. im not going to swap crossmembers that just seems to alot more work then you need to do if you can just switch the control arm shafts thats much easier and less hassle. i didnt even think about the p/s swap but thats an excelent idea does the 73-87 p/s box bolt right onto the 70 frame. i have the pump and brackets and pulleys from my sbc s-10 cause i took all that off it and put a 4cyl manuel box on it

The PS box will swap, and the coils should be the same from our body style to the square body trucks.

Also, if ya plan on dropping it anytime soon, they make conversion drop spindles. Drop spindles that accept your exisitng balljoints tierod ends and will use 71-72 and maybe 73-87 bearings rotors/calipers.

good luck!

disc upgrade is best ive done to my truck so far! go power disc

well i planed on using the 73-87 stuff because 1 i need lower control arms due to my oem 70 ones are way rotted and 2 i can get as much 73-87 parts as i need my buddy owns the junk yard and they got endless amounts of 73-87 but very few 67-72 i already had my way with them. and i am going to do power brakes since im gonna be using the 73-87 master and prop valve so i may as well use the booster to as long as it will mount right up

Grab a front sway bar while your at it.
The 3/4 ton trucks have the bigger 1-1/4" diameter sway bars.
This is a great upgrade in handling.

Re: questions about front disc swap on 70 c10

I just moved everything from an 81 to a 68. Moving the crossmember is a good idea since then you know that it was all a system that could be aligned, etc. Also, the U joints are bigger and on a wider spacing on the new ones. Easier to move the whole thing than to try to mix and match. You can take out the whole front end on either truck without even taking the springs/ball joints out. Just 14 bolts/nuts to remove, steering to disconnect and brake lines. You will need to widen some of the holes and drill 2 new ones.
