The old Gas smell in the cab

Well filled the tank the other day and had the smell of gas in the cab , didn't go away after driving for a day or two .The smell was strongest around the sending unit so I replaced the two small hoses that attach to the sendin unit and still smell gas . I'm thinking it's the gasket to the sending unit Why now???
Has anyone else had this gasket go bad??

I have seen them get cracks with age. Give it a shot. The gasket is cheap and it's a great way to spend half of a Saturday replacing the old one.

Check your gas cap, too. The rubber seal will age harden and crack and weep.

This is a little off the gasket topic, but several years ago I got back to my truck after a morning in the woods deer hunting, and when I opened the door, there was a strong gas smell. I opened all the windows and drove back home (5 miles), and proceded to look at the things you guys have mentioned, and couldn't spot anything out of order, yet the gas smell was strong. A little more looking and feeling around, and I discovered the carpet wet under the seat, so I knew then there was a leak. Proceded to take the seat out, and the carpet and insulation were soaked worse than I thought. The culprit was a piece of gravel that had become wedged between the floor pan and bottom of the tank. No telling how long it had been there, but it was tightly wedged and had managed to wear a pinhole into the tank. I guess the moral of the story is, if anyone has the seat out for any reason, it not only is a good time to give the area around the tank a good cleaning, but worth a look for anything that might have gotten in between the floor and tank, 'cause it doesn't take much to create a problem.

Bill, I have found that gas smells inside the cab can come from many sources. The first place I would look is at your fuel line leading into the carb. I darn near killed myself and family because of that. I smelled gas in the cab on that one all the way home from Monroe swap meet. I thought that it was the sending unit seal, seal for the pin that you connect the sending unit wire to, or leaking out the gas cap and the gas following the filler neck into the cab. Turned out to be a broken fuel line leading into the carb. Next, I would check around your filler neck. If your cap is leaking and following the neck back into the cab, you will see evidence of it. Then if that doesn't seam to be the problem, then check the sending unit. There are 2 seals to check there. One is the big "O" ring that seals the unit to the tank, and the other seals the pin that your sending unit wire plugs into. There will be a little nut that you can tighten if that is leaking. Sometimes you get lucky on that, but sometimes you dont. If you tighten the nut too tight you may ground the pin out on the sending unit and it needs to be isolated from it. Good luck. I had a pin hole in the bottom of my tank once. Slow leak but long enough to stink up the cab. I replaced the tank.

Bill, if it's your tank, you can have the one I pulled out of my cab. Let me know quick, as I have to go to Minn Saturday. I can probably find someone going to Pomona who can bring it to you.
