Whistles while you drive....can't stand it!

Now that the weather is getting a little cooler I'm driving with the windows up. What I notice the most is the whistling from the vent windows. It's driving me crazy!

I've replaced all the rubber gaskets, felt and seals, re-seated the glass and the vent lock/latches are tight. But I still get whistling. This summer I tried to find out where it was coming from by covering all the outside vent window rubber areas with masking tape and driving. It was quiet! Then I gradually removed the tape one piece at a time until I heard the whistle. Unfortunately, I still couldn't pinpoint where the whistle came from.

Anyone have suggestions or tricks to take care of this annoyance? Please - Nobody tell me to go with one-piece glass - I LIKE the vents!

Are the vent handles tight enough? Try washers/shims.

I have to ask. Does it only whistle while moving? If not, it may be the voices in your head!

If only while moving, the US Gov. issues shims for this. Depending upon your needs, they range in cost from a penny to a quarter and can be found at any bank.

What tune does it whistle? Just kidding. Try this: Close everything tight. Turn heater blower on high. From the outside take some soapy water and dab around the vent window-leak should show up as a bubble. If this fails change channels-might be whistling a differant tune. (LOL-still just kidding)

Is it the opening feature or the look you like? If it's just the look, I'd use black RTV silicone on the rubber. Use a tiny bead and you'll never know it was there, except for the lack of noise. I like the look of the vents, but never open them. This is likely what I'll do.

I feel your pain! I bought two new vent windows just so I could avoid this problem, now the drivers side whistles like crazy, it is making me crazy ! I like the soap idea I am going to try that , maybe then I can pinpoint the leak.

Yup, I had clear packing tape on for a while, except I DO like to open the vents, so I think I'll try jhow66's bubble maker idea. Besides, I have to leave one vent unlocked all the time because my door solenoid remote unit is acting flakey, sometimes it pops, sometimes it don't. Yes, I have a 911 cable, but have to lay on the ground to use it.

Just a thought.. In my obsession with all things heater/ ventilation realated I was thinking that our trucks, unlike slightly newer vehicles don't seem to have any exit vents for the cab. Newer vehicles all seem to have someplace for air to escape so the ventilation system can "flow through". mid '70's trucks had a black plastic vent inside the door jam. I'm thinkin if a person put some type of vent with a one-way flapper type valve in an inconspicuos place it would let the air out in a controlled way. This would stop the air from having to sneak out any place it could , as through vent seals etc. What do you think? It would also improve heater air flow volume. Also, your problem may not be eveident when the truck is parked because the cowel vent area is a natural high preasure area. As speed increases air is forced into the cowel and gives a bit of "boost" to your heating system. If you've ever driven a truck with a blown heater fan, you'll know becasue if you drive fast enough you can feel air come through the defroster/heater. ( Not recomended)

Well totaly off subject When I bought new Tires for my blazer I got the most grip I could fine. the Idoit that was selling them to me told me I didnt want them because they had to much road noise. I told him I have shot glasspacks and A loud radio. so.. anyway Id recomend ether of them. but my truck on the other hand has a hole through the floor I could throw a cat through so I dont have to worry about a whistle. Its just falling through.

Speaking of holes in the floor ! My wife and I flew back to St. Louis from Colorado for my 10 year High School reunion, we had been married about 1 year.I used an old 71 Ford truck that I had given to my dad to use while I was working in Colorado to drive downtown to the reunion. On the way there my wife was putting lotion on her hands and dropped her ring and it fell thru the floor onto the highway while I was driving 70 MPH in the fast lane in rush hour traffic ! She screamed stop! I said yeah right, needless to say it was gone ! the good thing is she took insurance out on the ring two days before we left!
