I have a 1998 k1500 with a 5.7 and 110,000 miles on it. Every person I know with one of these trucks the fuel pump went out at about the same milage. I was thinking about replacing the pump now as a precaution before it goes out and leaves me stranded. What do you guys think?

If it makes you feel better, nothing wrong with that. Mine has 145,000+ and the pump is still working fine.

i beleive the main cause of these pumps going is that they over heat. if you let your tank run right down to empty the pump may over heat because it will no longer be submerged. i try to make sure to not let my tank go below a 1/4 tank, as to not overheat the pump. the only bad thing is if the pump does fail you have to drain all the gas out to change it. and thats a pain in the butt

Mine had about 90 grand on it when it died. But it was feeding a '98 4.3L 2wd... But you've surpassed me by far, sometimes they just do that, and sometimes they just fall on their faces.

Very wise words there.. I was told mine was going, but that was 40 thousand miles ago. I keep my tank at least quarter full all the time, normally over half. Like driver64 says if they are unexposed alot, they burn up quicker. The tanks should always keep them submerged, but sometime defects allow the featuer to let the gas drain from around it.

I have 171,000 on the original pump in my '95. I install a new fuel filter every 15 to 20,000 miles and never run below a 1/4 tank. I plan on replacing the pump and strainer with AC-Delco at 200K if it does'nt go out before then.

Have you guys ever heard of a fuel pump that sounds like its working (humming) but is not providing enough pressure to start the truck? (96' 350 vortec in a 1/2 ton 4x4) mines acting up i think....wont stART but it i can hear a humm but it doesn't sound normal?????.....I changed it 30,000 miles ago.....

Fixed my truck ...it was the fuel pump! ...it humms and provided enough pressure when cranking that the the fuel pressure tester said it was ok!!!! Pulled it out, and put in a new GM pump,.. problem solved...Weird eh? the pump Ohms out just fine at 1ohm....but DOES NOT WORK!(well enough to provide "running Pressure".

-Just something to think about when you have a problem..

on my 96 k1500, fuel pump went out at 89k. it still ran, but pump was not always putting out enough pressure. i got it replaced before it quit completely. pump, sender, labor was a 600.00 deal.
