88 Buick Lesabre Help!

I have an 1988 Buick Lesabre with a 3.8L v6, the 3800 series. I recently purchased the car and have driven it once besides the test drive. After doing stop and go city driving and shopping the car was fine. I pulled into a restaurant close to the house and went inside, leaving my girlfriend in the car. When I returned she said it just started smelling warm. The car had started idling rough. I gave it a little gas and it instantly died. I turned the car to off, then accessory to make sure all the warning lights work and they did. I tried to restart it and it just died again. I waited a few minutes then it started right up and it made it the short distance home. I was wondering if anyone knows what would make it do that ? The car has 145,000 miles on it. I dont know much about these electronic engines and their sensors.
