How Many of You Travel for Work

Like it says , how many travel for work. I am fortunate that I work out of my home for the most part but I do have to travel. For the past 10 days I have been in Florida, and I will be here another 7-10 before I get to go home. If you do travel do you like it? It breaks things up for me and keeps me from geting bored + I get to go places I never would have gone without work. We work in 5 states, but most of my travel lately is to the office. Don

Re: How Many of You Travel for Work

Up until ~18 months ago I was travelling overseas (Europe) for work a lot. I work for a huge Swiss company at one of the Atlanta offices and was travelling to work on various projects. Haven't seen much travel lately, which I am not sure I like I like visiting and exploring over there, it's a whole new world. If I'd never been over there, I would have never realized how stupid your typical American stereotyping of Europeans is (and how off-base those stereotypes are). The killer chocolate and beer is just a side perk

Before this job, I had another job working for a lighting company where I ran a crew of Puerto Rican guys (I'm bilingual and roughly understand 5 languages now from travelling). We travelled all over the state of FL and some of southeast GA doing lighting in grocery stores, mostly Winn Dixie and Food Lion. Fun job. Got a weekly food budget, decent hotels and overall had good times. Lots of perks for the job, and I worked with some good people.

I never understood the people I work with who despise travelling for their job though. That is the weirdest thing to me.

Re: How Many of You Travel for Work

I have to go to jobsites and do inspections/meetings. We are located in Greenville, SC and most of our jobs are located in NC. I did have to go to WV last week, that was a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG day! I like it once in a while 'cause it gets me out of the office!!! It would drive me nuts if it was an everyday thing! I travel enough for personal things one the weekend. I go to columbia, sc and athens, GA a lot.

Re: How Many of You Travel for Work

Yep, I agree with Shifty. It is a nice perk as long as it's not for too long and too often. I travel all over, but it's on a somewhat random basis. I have so many air miles, hotel points, and rental car days that I get upgraded all the time and free flights, hotel nights, and car rentals to use for the family vacations. Add to that using a personal credit card that pays back a certain percent of charges (that are company expensed anyway), and you come out ahead on cash.

All that aside, checking out the rest of the country and world really gives you perspective (and generally an appreciation for how good we have it here).

Re: How Many of You Travel for Work

I travelled every week for 10 years , all in the west . Until last month , i couldn't take being away from home minimum 4 nites a week , so i quit . Like everything else , when you're not travelling you'd like to be , when you are , you wish you weren't . I will miss visiting the wrecking yards in the other states , i used to take a little " me " time and scout for 67 - 72's . The worst of it is my '05 Ram has 80k on it already . I'm planning to work from home for a while .
Later .............................................. 409.

Re: How Many of You Travel for Work

Well, just joined the group and this is my first post, so yeah... been traveling around the world for 30 years doing power plant startups. Been nice, but the problem is finding time (and a place) to work on cars. Just landed a new contract in Houston and it looks like I'll be here a while, so I rented a warehouse and flatbedded by 55 Napco in to begin a frame-up restoration (and hope the job lasts long enough for me to finish)! Already have a rare 66 short fleet 4x4 that I did a frame-up on, and an old Corvette. But this Napco 55 is sweet. I'll post some pics when I figure out how, and will definately be asking some questions cause I'm going to have to put a new rear end under the back. Oh yeah, traveling... the best place? Thailand. The worst? Saudia Arabia.

Re: How Many of You Travel for Work

I travel all over the US. I'm Vice President of a signage manufacturing firm and we have done projects all over. I was lucky as a child because my dad was a long distance truck driver so I got to see a lot of things, but as I've grown older I have learned to enjoy places I've never seen. Work has helped me to see a lot also. I like to travel because it breaks up the normal everyday stuff.

Re: How Many of You Travel for Work

I thought I would try to keep this going. I work for an insurance company taking care of there phone systems. This year I have been to Newark New Jersey (for school), Las Vegas (install IP phone system at our new location) (that was a great trip ), and Pasadena California (for Schooling on a new system). On the 30th of this month I will be in Lincroft New Jersey (for Schooling on a new system), and two weeks after that I’ll be in Wausau Wisconsin (visiting our main office).

Sorry there my fellow members but as I read many of the threads I kind of figured that we could talk about the things that come to our minds when people post their threads. Sorry that the REAL WORLD upsets me and I also forget that maybe if we forget or don't pay attention to the problems of today maybe they will just all go away. Political.......... everything is political. Thats whats wrong today, we americans don't stand up like we should. So the next time a plane fly's into a building, bomb blows up a train or what every they may have planned, maybe we can take up a donation and buy the nice bombers some flowers.

You are missing the point. No political post or threads are allowed (per board rules)...all they do is stir up trouble and arguments. Ever hear the saying "Never talk politics with friends or family"??? We have that same rule here for the same reason. Besides, you are heading down a path that will only lead to debates or arguments...all while taking the original thread off topic. I am sure there are message boards that allow politics, or are strictly political boards, find them and post away there if you like.

I'm not missing the point, I clearly understand. I wasn't trying to take the original thread off topic, but if you ever get on a plane this day and time doesn't that not go through your mind if your TRAVELING or are we suppose to forget it too. It all had to do with TRAVELING.I'm not running for any office, I was only trying to ask people to REMEMBER............ THAT'S ALL.Next thing, will be you can't ask for prayers neither, we know how political that is. We talk gas prices on here all the time you can't get more political than that can you.Give me a break it's not like I was asking anybody to join a cult, I was just talking about TRAVELING.I WILL NOT say I'm sorry for what I wrote because I am not ashamed in the way I feel about stupid people but what I will say is that I will try to do better in the future not to hurt feelings and follow our rules closer.

Hey man, no need to get bent out of shape...or apologize. We are just asking you to turn it down a notch and avoid political debates. If it makes you feel better, I bet 99% of the board feels the same way you do (including me)...but it only takes one person to disagree...then before you know it, it turns into an argument. This is why we have the rules we do...trying to keep this place civil, fun, and enjoyable.

Re: How Many of You Travel for Work

While I call myself a welder, my real job is at a desk. Myself and a longtime friend run a powerplant engineering company. We design and manufacture parts for coal fired power plants, so I do get to travel to various parts of the US, Canada, and occasionally to the UK. When working on a new design, I get to head out to the shop and grab a welder for myself once in a while.

The traveling is not that often, so I really enjoy it when I do get to go.
