Did you know you could hook your TV up to your laptop?

I guess I said that backwards in the title... oops...

If you did, good for you

But I didn't and I just figured it out today

We have Netflix and we just watched our first netflix movie on the computer through the TV!

It was so easy, I'm almost embarassed! If you have a TV with an "S video" port, you just run an S Video cable from the TV to the computer and on a dell laptop you push "Fn" and "F8", put the TV on audio/video and you can see your computer screen on the TV. We have an older TV and the picture was really good! I guess I have to buy another cable to run the sound through the TV or our surround sound, but you can still hear it through the laptop.

Just thought I'd share with some of the other non computer literate here!

Re: Did you know you could hook your TV up to your laptop?

there are adapters that you can buy that will take S-video and RCA jack sound cables and adapt to a regular cable connection.

Re: Did you know you could hook your TV up to your laptop?

I run a laptop to my projector in my basement. 120" of pure cinematic delight! Netflix rocks. Check out hulu.com for movies and tv shows. I don't have cable and I work odd hours so I can still catch up on some of my shows.

if you value your lap top NEVER LEAVE IT ON CARPET

and this will work on ANY tve with VGA, hdmi rca, etc etc.. so long as a TV has a input you can in fact hook a computer to it..
the important part is to pay attention to is if the computer to telivision "plugs" have an audio option..
for examle VGA plugs do NOT carry audio.. i run a male to male audio jumper...

hdmi does carry audio... etc etc etc..
now just because you can hook yer puter to the tv dosent mean you have to do it...
alot of times the computer resolution is not good on the tv...
but if you have a "flat screen" crt (regular old "big tv") to a new current super fla LCD or plasma etc..
you are set!
most round screens dont look good with computer input..

Re: Did you know you could hook your TV up to your laptop?

That's pretty neat. They ought to call it "WEB TV".

(jk). Before somebody gave me this computer I had a WebTV and used to view everything on my 27" Toshiba. I used to scoff at all the other folks staring into their little monitors while I lounged in comfort on the sofa.

But thanks, I didn't know you could do this with a compurter,I thought that you had to have a special converter or something.

Whoops

Yeah, I normally fuss at my wife for leaving it on the couch or ottoman. She killed her last laptop that way. It sinks in and the fans can't get any air. I wanted a "clean pic" so I moved the wood chair it was sitting on

Re: Did you know you could hook your TV up to your laptop?

Tv has S video port and laptop has s video port. One cable. An S video port/cable is circular with metal pegs inside it. Then on my laptop you push FN and F8 together to "turn the port on" so it exports what's on the screen.

I tried it. The TV was way too uncomfortable in my lap though.

Ah, there's my problem! My laptop doesn't have an S video port. I tend to keep things till they break, then keep fixing them until they flat don't work anymore.

It's probably time to upgrade my laptop sometime in the next year or two.....

Re: Did you know you could hook your TV up to your laptop?

Here's what they look like:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-Video

My TV is at least 6 years old and it had the port. Not sure when they started putting them "standard" on TV's and laptops.

I have a tendency to keep things a long time too.

My TV has is, that's how the DirecTv is hooked up to it. Or is it the DVD player? Hmm, I can't remember now. This TV is right at 7 years old, a 52" wide screen rear projector. Bought it new when we built the house.

Re: Did you know you could hook your TV up to your laptop?

So many more variations you can do with desktops instead of laptops. DVB cable or satellite cards, hdmi outputs on graphic cards to get hdtv, linux based satellite/cable settop boxes that can become networked media players. The sky's really the limit if you look into it enough.
