VSS or not???

I'm installing a 1990 Chevy truck TBI motor with 700r transmisson in my 70 Chevy truck. I've been talking to a few people about cable vs electronic speedometer in my 70 Chevy. Some are telling me to change out the tailhousing on my 770r to the older cable drive and keep my speedometer. So far I have not got a good answer on wether or not the computer will work correctly without having the VSS hooked up? I have also been told of an adapter that will convert a cable drive into VSS and also allow you to hook the cable into it.
So, what's the true answers?

Re: VSS or not???

I ran into the notorious VSS complex with a completely unrelated swap (unrelated in means to 67-72 trucks) when swapping a 4.3 tbi /w 700r4 into my first gen toyota 4x4. Ive run with the VSS unplugged for almost 90k miles with zero issues. 700r4 using the stocker TV cable ofc.

A good website with a ton of info is jagsthatrun.com regarding the VSS.. think most of the VSS issues come into play when using the newer 4L60E transmissions..

Anywho, Good luck with it

Re: VSS or not???

I am running a 91 TBI motor and computer in my 67 Chevy truck with a 400 transmission with no problems. The computer does not talk to the transmission with a 700R4. Now if you were running a 4L80E trans behing the TBI it would be a different story and you would need the Vss and more. I will not get into the details here but you will be fine running the 350.
