New engine help

alright guys heres my issue.
i have a 65 chevy with a beat up 350. its basicly a parts engine witch i figured out when i took it appart to clean it. the block is from a 70 car, heads are 76-85 truck, i think. intake is a 68 truck. 2 barrel rochester year vehicle ??? who knows. i tried to make it work but now the valve stems are bad and rocker nuts keep loosening. block is bored .40. im tired of messin with it. srry for the rrrrrrrant

point is i want to drive the heck out of it but right when it seems to be good something new happens.

what is a good crate engine that i can drop in and go for a good price. i want it to be a DD and not looking for anything fancy. i have the original powerglide still attached. thanks in advance

The 290hp GM 350 is a fantastic engine and would deliver plenty of power without breaking the bank.

Have you checked the cylinder walls and measured them?

If they are good why not just re-ring and bearing the short block and install a new set of aftermarket iron heads?

do you have a link. im really sick of dealing with that engine so i really dont want to bother anymore. plus the crank is stripped where the harmonic balancer bolts on to. i got maybe 2 threads in

I have that engine swapped into my 1950 ford (I know...it has a camaro front clip on it). Its a good engine for the money, and surprisingly has a pretty good amount of power. I have sanderson headers on it, flowmaster exhaust, comp cams camshaft, edelbrock intake manifold, holley carb, HEI dist. with taylor 8mm wires, and it runs and sounds great!

^+1 For an inexpensive crate engine (everything is new), this one is hard to beat. Comes with a warranty, has enought power to be fun on the street, and is still mild enough that fuel mileage and drive-ablility is more than reasonable. I know quite a few guys who have this engine for exactly what you are looking for, and love it.

call up the dealer near you and tell them you want a crate engine and how much they can get you one for. You live in San Jose so there are many around. I got a crate engine for my 79 in Pittsburg @ Winter Chevrolet .

You may want to check out Blueprint Engines. They have lots of different packages and are fairly inexpensive. I got thier 405 hp 383 longblock with intake manifold for on sale for $2965 (normally around $3200) before taxes. They use remanufactured blocks but everything else is brand new and they come with a 30 month warranty. Summit Racing and Jeg's both carry them.

For a new 350 I'd check out Jeg's. They beat Summit prices too. As mentioned the 290 HP is quite an engine but you mentioned saving a few bucks. The 260 HP engine fron Jeg's sounds like the way to go..check prices and compare...btw these are new engines not rebuilt with a nice warranty.

what intake and carb would work well with either the 260 hp or 290 hp engine? this way i can compare and see what my pockets can handle.

i dont have a specific budget but dont want to go crazy. if it feels right i ll go for it. thanks

Stay away from single plane manifolds!

The Edelbrock Performer RPM and a 600 Holley (#1850) work perfect. Also, if you don't already have one I highly recommend going to HEI ignition.

That top end kit would work, but for the slight difference in money I would go with at least the 260hp engine.....it's only $200 more for an extra 65hp.

I found the receipt for my engine, that's the one I have 10067353. I'm running an Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold (because I got it for free) along with a 1405 600 CFM Edelbrock carb, and stock HEI. The only engine modification is a Pete Jackson gear drive. It has somewhere around 150k on it now and still runs great. Whenever the budget allows I'll replace it with the same thing. I believe the only differences on the 290 hp version are a nodular iron crank and a different cam. Unless you're going to build it up I'm not sure that's worth another $500.

Yes that is the 260hp engine.....and yes Jegs does have the better price....the same price as Summit wanted for the 195hp engine. I see Jegs has some packages listed down towards the bottom of that page.

you cant beat the 3 years or 100,000 miles warranty, i have installed a half dozen of the gm crate engines in various vehicles without any problems and the confidence of a nationwide warranty covered at any dealership

Don't forget to factor in the cost of freight as well.

The Edelbrock EPS manifold is also a good choice but I cant say anything about their carbs; no experience with them.

i also ordered some parts from summit. should arrive today. i always get my orders from summit with in 2 days. very cool

also can i use water pump, fuel pump, alternator, and ballancer from old engine?? all are new
