Shocks for a '71 K20 & installation
I looked but I didn't see a thread.
OK the shocks are gone. I have a 3 to 4 inch lift and I'm running 255 85r 16 tires on my '71 K20. How difficult is it to install the shocks? I'm thinking of going with Rancho 5000's. Opinions? What tools do I need? What is the procedure? When I'm done with my truck, we are going to do the C20. Same procedure? Thanks in advance for any help. |

Shocks "should be" very easy, but it's not always that way...
It is supposed to be as simple as a 3/4" socket and a wrench to take the nut off of the bolt. But, many times the bolt is rusted to the metal sleeve that is inside the rubber bushing. This can prove to be rather difficult. The rears have a through-bolt at the bottom only, the upper is a "stud" that goes through the frame at a 90 degree angle to the travel of the shock. These can go either way, sometimes they are easy, sometimes they want to fight too. The advantage of the way the rears are made is that it is very easy to just "break them off". It is a single shear stud, rotate the shock away from obstructions and pull it out away from the frame and the stud will snap....done.
