What size cragar s/s and tire should I get? (pics included)

The top picture is of the truck I am most likely picking up on Sunday.
The bottom picture is how I want the truck to eventually be.

The front tires are brand new and i would like to reuse them either in the front or rear. They are 215x75 or 70 R15. If I keep them in the front what size tire should i shoot for in the back? And what size cragar ss should I be looking for (front and rear) to pull this look off?

how the truck is now.

photoshopped of how i want the truck to look.

Gotta like a guy with a plan! And it's a good plan.

How about 15x10 Cragars for the back, 15x8's in the front. And then 235-75's for the front and at least 31x10.5's for the rear?

The biggest you can get, diameter and width for the rear would look sweet!

At some point in the near future I am going to have to pick the wheels for my 62. It would seem there must be some place to have a line drawing or similar and then put on the different choices to pick wheels and the look.

Is there such a process.

If you have a clean photo of your truck, preferably in profile, you can submit a request to the Photoshop Forum on this site. It would probably help if you could also provide photos of the wheels you like, taken from a similar angle:

Here's a nice line drawing (64-66 though) that someone previously posted. I hung onto it to do the exact same stuff you're talking about. Hope it helps.

If you were going to leave the truck at the ride height it is now, I'd agree with Lakeroadster. With it dropped so far in the back I'd think stock 15x6 Cragars or Supremes all the way around would look great. With the dummy spots however, I'd also I'd keep the skirts, and with the scallops it would look good with 56 Old Fiesta spinners (or full Moon discs) and wide whites, or chrome wheels/thin whites with spiders.

A 15X10 is too wide for 31x10.50R15 (I know it sounds crazy but the max recommended rim width is 9.0"). Yes, I know they will bead up and that many have done it for year and years..... But wrong is wrong regardless of the success others have had.

Here is my '65 with 31X10.50R15 on 15x8's with std offset (same wheel and tire sizes front & rear).

And a shot showing their placement in relation to the fenderwell.

If you are lowering it as shown in your photoshopped picture and want to reuse the fronts (215/75R15?) I would recommend a 15X7 wheel. If you want to run a staggered fit using your current front tires I would suggest either 225/70 or 235/70R15 for the rears on the same 7" wheel.

15x7" fronts would work well w/the current tires. For taller wider, 15x8" w/255-70-15's would compliment the fronts w/o much concern @ your proposed ride height.

I like the look of the 10" wheel & 31" tire suggestion, but would imagine there will be some 'fit' concerns when/if lowered.

The best way to determine what will fit is to get the truck sitting at the level you want first. Then pull a wheel and measure clearances to the wheel seating surfaces.

There can be subtle changes side to side so measure all four.

Then buy wheels and tires accordingly.

No problem. 27" fronts & a touch over 28.75" in the back.

Re: What size cragar s/s and tire should I get? (pics included)

I will be running a 383 sbc with a TH350 at first and moving to a 700R4 that has overdrive eventually. The rear is a 12 bolt with 3.73 gearing.

I am trying to decide on a tire combo and the ones I have found that I like are these two.

First up is 255x60x15 in the back and 245x60x15 in the front. Back tire diam would be 27" and front would be 26.6"

Second up is 255x70x15 in the back and 235x70x15 in the front. Back tire diam would be 29.1 and front would be 28"

With the second set I would gain some clearance, some highway gearing.
How much handling would i gain with the 60's? it isn't a road track vehicle in the first place.

I am going to go with cragar ss and probably the cooper version of the radial t/a.

anybody have any feedback on these combos pros/cons?

Re: What size cragar s/s and tire should I get? (pics included)

hahaha... glad to see my truck is being used a reference. LOL

Honestly I went thru the same debate between 60 and 70 series tires. I looked a tons of pictures. I found I liked both setups depending on the truck they were on. What decided it for me was with the headers that are on the truck, they hang below the frame rails and we have large speed bumps in the neighborhood (to keep the ricers from racing down the streets) and I didn't want to risk bottoming them out. Since I was going for an old school hot rod look, the 70 series had the right look, gave me some clearance and helps with gearing. Just was a win/win all the way around.

Now my '68 C10 will get 60 series (255/60 front, 275/60 rear) but the exhaust is tucked up more and I am going more with a Pro-Touring look and am setting it up to handle.

That's my two cents...

I am pretty sure i am going 70 series. I have had a lowered mini truck, older camaro, and monte carlo and it was a pain to have to go in sideways.

right now i have 235x75 front/rear. I don't mind the rear look (the six lug rear wheels are way too wide though) but the 235x75 looks too big in the front for me.

Re: What size cragar s/s and tire should I get? (pics included)

with a 3.73, the 70's will help you out a bit on highway rpm (while you still have the TH350). My personal pref is 70 or 75 series tires on these trucks, even if lowered since they tend to fill the wheelwells a little more than 60's - but it really does come down to personal pref. Some folks like the aspect ratio of the 60's better. I ran 255/70/15s on my truck, had no clearance issues, filled the wheelwells pretty well - then I switched to 235/75/15s (on stock wheels) and they were approx the same height as the 255/70's. One thing to consider - if you do plan to lower the truck, the taller tires can sometimes make a lowered truck look "more lowered" since with a given amount of drop - more of the tire will be covered on a higher aspect ratio tire (70 or 75) as compared to a 60 series. So, either way you cut it, seems the 70's would be the way to go vice the 60's. If you lower it a lot, won't really matter though. Nice truck by the way!
