Rear end
What sign to get before a rear end goes out or when it's getting low on oil

Re: Rear end
The most obvious sign would be visible external leakage. It is very easy to check the oil level through the filler plug hole. Most owner's manuals prescribe mileage/time intervals for checking the differential lube just as for other fluids.

Re: Rear end
Well my rear end is leaking. Right were I hook up the driveline.
I've been having issue with a rumbling noise coming from the rear when going around 60 and fades after. I thought it would go away after swapping tranny, balancing driveline addig new ujoints and hoping it would be gone. So now I'm thinking it may be the rearend. In front of the rear end were the nut is there a seal there? Posted via Mobile Device Last edited by Sick5; 09-30-2010 at 12:02 AM. |

Re: Rear end
Unfortunately, you might be looking at a pinion bearing failure. That could account for both the noise and the pinion seal leak. Grab the pinion yoke with both hands and see if you can wiggle it. Rotational play is ok, but there should be no in/out, up/down, or sideways movement of any kind.

Re: Rear end
Well, if your truck was newer, like from the 70s, I would say you might have a Gov-lock, but I don't think those go back as far as 61.
