Post under hood wireing prob. on my 86

ok, guys. i bought a 86 3/4 ton 4x4 and put a crate 350 in it. the original motor was not in it , so i dont know exactly how the wires went. i just need the basic alt, bat. chargeing . i got the alt chargeing the bat, but one of the wires is drawing juce and the bat goes dead overnight. i know whitch wire it is, so i put a toggle switch on it, and switch it off at night. with out that wire, my truck runs off the battery !that wire has a lot of resestance, almost grounded? but the truck wont run without it.im not useing the computer under the dash if that helps. i have 3 big red wires coming from the cab, and my alt wires, and coil. thats it. if someone could tell me the basics starting with my alt, then my battery, and starter, thats all i need. its just a mud truck.i cant figure it out.......thanks
