HEI distributor 12volt ignition source?

I am in the process of starting up an engine that had points but recently installed a HEI distributor. Is the 12v a constant 12v while the key is on or only while cranking of the engine? I hope this makes sense.

Should be constant while engine is running. I ran mine to a switch and then to a battery block I installed inside the cab. Oops..now you all know! Dang it. Still gotta find the switch though.

It is constant. If I recall correctly it is a pink wire. If in doubt just throw voltmeter on it and will figure out really fast. One thing to keep in mind with HEI (and the reason I got away from it) is that you MUST have at least 12 volts to it or will start getting misfires. Really annoying if you do not drive truck continuously or have weak batteries or charging system.

Run a 10 gauge wire from your ignition unfused plug in your fuse panel to the Dizzy

A good alternator putting out the 13 plus volts should be enough to keep the engine from misfiring. Keep in mind that the battery is primarily for starting the engine. Once it starts, the alternator supplies most of the voltage for the engine.

Re: HEI distributor 12volt ignition source?

Good point 68gmsee. I had problems always trying to start the 535 BBC because the starter stole so much juice to turn it over that the HEI wouldn't have enough to fire the engine off the way I wanted. MSD fixed it all though
