3 speed problem
My three speed hangs up in neutral. It has a hard time going from 1st to 2nd and vice versa. I have never taken one apart. Mt question is should i take it completely apart and rebuild or just fix the problem? Does anybody know what the problem is? When I bought the truck the shifter was frozen. I lubed it up and worked it free to get it at this point. I also replaced the shift grommets on the trans and the shift forks. Any help will would be great.

Re: 3 speed problem
Ya know what ? I had the same problem with my three on the tree set up on my 69C10. I changed the grommets in the same locations as you did. I realigned the linkage and that didnt even work. My frustration lead me to "plan C ". And that was to by an aftermarket shifter from "Hurst". They make a direct bolt on for the Chevy three speed . It took me a couple of hours to install and with alittle fine tuning, I've never had a problem with it since.Hope this helps.

Re: 3 speed problem
I gave the truck to my son in Palmdale California. He's screwing around at Venice Beach right now. I'll see if I can get him to shoot me a shot of it tommorrow.

Re: 3 speed problem
The Hurst 3 speed shifter for a 69 won't bolt directly on a 62 3 speed. The shifter mount onto the tranny is different. You'll need an adaptor to mount it. It can be done except for one problem. Hurst makes the shifter but not the install kit anymore.
The Hurst were called Mystery shifters IIRC. |

Re: 3 speed problem
Yep Yep your right geezer#99 ! Hurst part #3666809 is the shifter, but install kit no longer available . 62 Barnfind youd have to dig around for the install kit. Sorry for the "mis-steer".

Re: 3 speed problem
62 Barnfind. If you decide to go with the hurst shifter I know of a pair of install kits in Vancouver BC. They're a hundred bucks each. They were there 3 months ago.
Pm me if you want the contact info. I've always used the cheaper Mr. Gasket #7667A universal shifter in my trucks. Ebay has them from 30-100 bucks. They work fairly well. |

Re: 3 speed problem
have you tried to tighten up the shift arms on column? At the very bottom of the there is a ring collar that has two bolts ..lossen the bolts and turn the collar there are angle slots in it ...turning the collar will tighten the shift arms....probally will fix your problem

Re: 3 speed problem
When that happens if you're stuck you can get out and manually move the linkage from under the truck (just shift it into any gear, preferably while turned off and the emergency brake is on. If not, hope you can run fast!)
Once you wiggle it into a gear it'll be OK again for a while. Here's a thread on the problem with fixes: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=215307

Re: 3 speed problem
My 70 had a problem lots of slop and I adjusted the shifter linage on the end of the column. There is a FAQ in the 67-72 section on how to do it . It is very simple to do and only takes a few min. and makes a big difference. I have since decided to go to a T-5 swap in my truck along with a tilt column that the shifter knot was ground down and the hole filled and smoothedso that it will look like a factory tilt. I am even doing the Camaro trans with the S-10 tailshaft housing and also going to put in a high hump floor panel to make it look a little more factory. Jim

Re: 3 speed problem
I adjusted the column already. This was before the new bushings. I seems like the whole thing needs to be cleaned and lubed. When it hangs up I can move the arms under the hood to get it free. Is there a bushing or something that makes it hang up? Or I need to take it apart and clean, lube and adjust it?

Re: 3 speed problem
Here's what the problem is IIRC!
In the pic in the link from Fetchme the two bent arms have those small nubs sticking out towards the centre arm. The centre arm has a slot in it that the nubs fit in. Over time the small nubs get rounded off and don't slide deeply into the slot and easily slip out when you shift. One cure is to build them up with a bit of weld and then file them square. When you shift try this method. Going from 1st to second don't try to slide right into 2nd. Shift slightly up towards reverse then back down and up to 2nd. This way the first gear arm gets moved all the way up to nuetral before you go into 2nd. Shifting back from 2nd to 1st is done the same way. Slightly down to third then back up and over to 1st. With a non synchro 1st tranny you'll need to double clutch it to keep it from grinding. By reshaping the nubs making them squarer and slightly longer will make quite a difference. |

How are the linkages.
Mine used to hang up a lot due to the linkages. We rebuilt her and she never jumped out of gear or hung up again. 1960-1964 rebuilt 1/2 ton 3 speed transmission http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...35#post4738435 Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 3 speed problem
I guess they are all right. Does classic parts or LMC sell them? I will try a new set.
