yes it will work you just need to get all the computer, wiring,
the computer might need to be flashed to work with your setting
http://www.lt1swap.com/enginepics.htm
you will need a book of the truck so you can know the wiring harness
is it a 5.3 or 5.7

You can ditch all the FI stuff. Cheaper too. You can swap in an HEI distributor, dual plane intake, FI pump (if it does not have a mechanical provision), larger cam and keep your tranny. HP -> 300-350 or more with the right cam.

gchemist is right take the FI intake, ignition and the remainder of the FI stuff and put a dual plane intake,HEI distributor(just rebuild and re-use yours),re-use your carb after rebuilding it(assuming you have a Q-Jet)or my suggestion is to put an edelbrock carb on it there more reliable imo than a q-jet,i agree with the larger cam suggestion as well.to help offset the cost of the motor and parts swap you could always sell the FI put it on crazylist(craigslist)someone out there who is doing a FI swap may want it.Good luck whatever you do and feel free to ask any questions.

Second that, it's what I did for my 81 crew. A lot less hassle and the results can be near as good as EFI with regards to MPG if you take your time to setup the card and ignition.

You have everything from the donor truck..Use it.
I can't see how it would be cheaper when you have what you need in the donor.

The entire gauge cluster would have to be updated for electronic input. You can buy FI pumps to fit your current gas tanks. You'l need an adaptor to fit tranny to transfer case from www.advanceadaptors.com.

Also, if you choose to go the carb route, you will need to get an intake manifold that will bolt up to the vortec heads.

Not knowing anything about how to convert the truck to FI using the 98 vortec truck, I think the easiest way to get it on the road would probably be to use the long block from the 98, and then buy an intake manifold, and reuse all of the engine parts from the 86 like the carb, distributor, exhaust manifolds, etc.

If I were in your shoes, (an 86 truck with a bad motor, and a 98 parts truck at your disposal), I would read up on how to convert the 86 to fuel injections using the entire 98 vortec engine, computer, trans, etc. It is a much better engine in my opinion. It will just take a little bit of time to figure out, but there is lots of information on this site.

Aftermarket stand alone TBI systems are cheap compared to MPFI. Making less than 350 HP makes a TBI easy to add. A stock GM TBI would be easy to add with the correct intake manifold.

Check out this stand alone TBI.
