Door latch butcher repair job
Just when you think you have seen them all. This is the latch on the drivers door. For some reason they seen fit to replace the cross tip latch screws with 4 in long now rusted beyond easy removal. The door other than these holes for the latch is great as it has been reskinned, sanded already, and ready for primer n paint. I think I'm limited now to just cut a repair section panel from another door. Anyone with other ideas?

Drill the screws.Just take a drill and drill the heads off or drill into the screw. The latch can then be taken out.You might even get sme PB Blaster on the screws and get them out from the back after it's out.

Boy, I don't know Ron. I think the first thing I would do is to get the old one out and set an original screw in each of the holes and see how bad the fit really is. You may actually be able to weld the bad spots up and make it work. The heads on the original ones are pretty good size. The cut & weld would be your only other option I guess. LockDoc

Re: Door latch butcher repair job
Proper screws are not even close. They float straight through the hole. Sure hate to butcher another door to fix this and not look like a hack job when done. I have soaked this with PB blaster for a week. Getting the latch out isn't the problem. I can handle that with a cutoff wheel.

Re: Door latch butcher repair job
After all is said and done every time I open the door I am going to see this. So just putting washers on the original screws isn't going to work for me.

Re: Door latch butcher repair job
Maybe you could find a door that has the bottom all rusted out but still has a good latch area.

I agree, find a bad door and do the section. Just take your time and it will come out nice alittle skim of filler some primer and no one will know but you

Or drill the holes out to the outside diameter of a washer that work with the screws. Then weld and metalwork the washers in.

Re: Door latch butcher repair job
Weld the threaded end of a bolt onto the screw head and turn it out with a wrench. If it breaks the shank of the screw off, it's probably just as good as getting it out.

Re: Door latch butcher repair job
Sanford&daughter Drivers side..Make sure it is a worthless door ready for scrap. Because it isn't worth destroying a decent door. PM me if you find one..
