Starter wiring help

I bought a mini high torque starter but have a points distrib. I have 2 wires that connect to the R side on the old starter solenoid and one to the S side. I know I have to put a diode in the wire that was connected to the R side but which wire??? Why would there be 2 wires? Any help is appreciated.

Re: Starter wiring help

The purple wire comes from the ign. switch when turned to start. It connects to the S term. The other wires go to the R term. They feed the coil through a resister & bypass the resister in the start position for more voltage to the coil. You do not need a diode.

Thanks for the reply. The directions for the new starter states that if you have a points distrib. You have 2 options: 1. Put in a remote solenoid. 2. Place a 3a/400 piv diode in the wire was connected to the R terminal. So where do I connect that wire to the new starter?

Re: Starter wiring help

If you Have two terminals on the starter S and R then Wrench is correct, but if you only have one terminal on the mini starter you will have to connect all three wires to the same terminal in order to get the solenoid to engage and to get the 12 volt feed wire and the resistance wire to feed the coil. You will have to install the diode in line with the two wires that used to go to the R terminal, to keep the ignition wire that goes to the coil from back feeding the terminal on the mini starter and keeping the solenoid engaged or trying to engage.

Furthurmore you will have to install the diode on a short wire off the starter terminal and then join the two wires together on the cathode side of the diode or the wire from the key switch will feed the starter solenoid anytime the ignition is on.

It might be easier to connect the resistance wire directly to the coil positive terminal and run a single wire from the starter terminal to the coil positive terminal with the diode inline.
