455 torque convertor?

I have a 455 bored .30 over with a 453/456 valve lift cam, air gap intake, slightly ported g heads with an 870 streetavenger. Block has been decked and line bored etc. I'm putting a th350 behind it with a shift kit and just wondering what stall I should run? The cam is 1000-5200 rpm. I ordered a 1800-2200 convertor because everyone always says to stay close to bottom of powerband but I talked to another company that figured I should run a 3200. Now I'm not sure. I'm putting it into a 58 gmc with a 3:90 rearend and am just using it as a Sunday driver and to melt some rubber when I feel the need. Thanks for your help.

Re: 455 torque convertor?

I'm no expert but I'll assume G head and 455 you are talking Oldsmobile.
I'd stick with the 2200. Those 455's make plenty of torque. So your 3.90 gears are going to get to the 5000 RPM limit these engines like real fast.
Hurrying that along with a higher stall probably works great for a SBC but likely not needed for a 500 ft. lb. Olds.

my 2cent.

Re: 455 torque convertor?

A higher stall will make it a fun ride but a dangerous one with that much torque kicking in at 3200. I'd say go with the 2200. That sounds like a good match to your combo.

I'd also be curious how long that TH350 is going to hold up. The lower stall may help save it? ... good luck. It's a tough trans, but that engine is a torque monster.

Re: 455 torque convertor?

Big inch motors usually don't need a high stall especially when kept mild. With your powerband I would stick with that 2200 converter. That thing should liquify the tires at will with the amount of torque you will be making.

Re: 455 torque convertor?

Thanks guys, that's kinda what I thought but I haven't had a lot of experience with this so I was second guessing my research. This is an olds motor sorry I forgot to mention that. I can't wait to get it in the truck. Here's a pic of the motor.

Re: 455 torque convertor?

Sweet olds, I used to have a 72 cutlass S in mint condition with a 350 rocket. My dad bought it new and sold it about 18 yrs later. I asked the guy a few years later if he would sell it and he did, I paid a lot but it only had around 50000 original miles. A few years later I sold it being young and not having enough money to store it. Regretted it ever since. Wish I could find one to throw this motor in haha.
