Need advice short vs long bed
Ok so tho other day I put my 67 swb up for sale had a buyer come look at it he buys it that's great it needed to go but there's more he drives up in a 70 4wd long bed that his dad bought new in 70 it has a sbc 400 in it that is new new wheels and tires and is quite rust free no extra options other than he has the tailgate and camper at his parents that were also bought in 70. He then notices my dd 70 2wd swb it has a fuel injected 350 700r4 power steering/brakes tilt cruise new interior and all new suspention I love this truck it gets 22mpg on average and is a pleasure to drive he wants to trade me his 4wd for it what would you do?

It's an opinion thing but I'm kinda partial to 4X4's so I would end up trading him.

I'm hoping for more input but I'm also leaning towards the trade I know where a few more swb's are for a smoking deal so it not to hard to replace

Re: Need advice short vs long bed
It sounds to me like your truck is worth a lot more than his is.

Re: Need advice short vs long bed
You have to think of it in terms of an investment. How much is in your swb, and how much in his lwb. In my opinion you could sell yours and purchase a 4x4 with cash left over. At least here in Ca you could. Now if you NEED the 4wd for some practical use then just weigh your options. Tires are generally more expensive and wear faster on a 4wd as well. Food for thought. Good luck with your decision.

It's an opinion thing but I'm kinda partial to 2wd SWB's so I would end up staying with what I had.

Re: Need advice short vs long bed
I'm partial to lwb trucks, and 3/4 ton or larger at that, but I would look at the difference in usability, and interior. How much would his take to make it comfortable, and how much use do you have for an actual truck. Not those street-rods-with-a-bed things, called trucks, I mean an actual haul-your-house-down-pull-people-out-of-ditches truck.
If you have a need for a work horse, go for it.

Re: Need advice short vs long bed
There's the problem I abuse the **** out of a truck it's always full or has a trailer hooked to it but I have access to a longhorn 402 truck for 1500 to fill the truck need I do take the dd short bed camping and everywhere I go I built the swb to be a nice driver to and from work that I can stop at the feed store or machine shop on my way home and still have a truck also have a blazer that will run and drive some day

Re: Need advice short vs long bed
If your looking for something to beat on, I would go with the Longhorn. I would feel bad abusing a one owner stock truck. Unless they did. I have hauled engines, dirtbikes, feed, and hay with my SWB, but I wouldn't trust it to haul more than one round bale at a time. I have pulled other half ton trucks to gas stations, but couldn't rescue a one ton diesel.
My LWB... Yeah, that will do everything my SWB can't.

Re: Need advice short vs long bed
Sounds a lot like you are answering your own questions with access to the longhorn and your well documented truck. Sometimes it really helps to make a list of the pros and cons of both vehicles.

Re: Need advice short vs long bed
I love 4x4's always have,
When the pavement ends, the 2wd trucks have to stop, not a 4x4. Don't get me wrong, I really like SWB 2wd trucks as well, but I couldn't drive it for several months a year, living in KS, Plus ALL trucks are made for work regardless of 2wd or 4wd. Now the whole lwb vs SWB is a matter of opinion, if you're going to lift it and put some big tires on it (?) IMO the lwb trucks look shorter the higher they're lifted and the bigger the tires get lol, SWB trucks look stubby and to short with tires around 36" or bigger. Just my opinion though... |

Re: Need advice short vs long bed
Definitely opinion, But here is what I have to offer . . .
My father purchased a 4x4 new back in 1971, I loved that truck so much and literally cried when the inspection station stated that the frame was supposedly cracked and that it would not pass Pennsylvania state inspection any longer. No physical damage to the truck, never wrecked. (The truck was only 6 years old!!) Anyway I have always told my wife that I wanted to purchase a truck like the one my father had and I recently have but 2wd, and I'm just as happy, Probably not the answer you are looking for but I think as long as we have one of these great rides it doesn't matter if it is a 4x4 or a 4 cylinder that some crazy nutball put in, (Well yeah it does) The point is we are all very fortunate to have whatever we have. And if you like the 4x4 well then go for it, you're not loosing anything except 22mpg!!!!!! Enjoy and post pictures |

Re: Need advice short vs long bed
I gave it up for 396 cubic inches of American made big block chevy. I figure with all the foreign electric and hybrid "cars" silently scurrying around out there it's my duty to show the younger crowd that cars and trucks can be fun and they don't need to be shaped like a scrubbing bubble or a wedge.
