Turbo 350 problem

I have a turbo 350 trans which is now out of the truck, it was rebuilt from previous owner, the problem is when you put it into drive it would hesitate before it would engage in forward and reverse, Oil level was fine, I pulled it apart today and found everthing is in really good condition, the pump clutches seals all look fine which is a bit of a worry because I don't want to put it back in and have the same problem, could it be the torque converter doing this ? it looks like it has been replaced also, it has a number on it 47011 which I looked up, summit advertise it as Boss Hog night stalker, the truck has done 3500mls since rebuild, any Ideas ?

Re: Turbo 350 problem

A transmission slow to engage is either low pump pressure (bad pump) or lip seals in drums not sealing. Have you torn the unit completely down? By completely I mean tearing the drums themselves apart?

Re: Turbo 350 problem

i bought a boss hog , in the past had problems with it not correctly working , not a fan , when i rebuilt my tranny last month i went back with a B/M holeshot (using them years ago) works perfect , I should have bought the B/M the first time Around , but tried to save money, I guess the lesson here is Stick with what has worked well in the past,
if you rebuild the tranny, ditch the boss hog POS

Re: Turbo 350 problem

I have seen people have both real good and real bad luck with both the boss hog and B&M converters. I personally wouldn't put any of the garbage converters B&M sells in anything I run. B&M has been living on a name for a very long time. If you want quality look at Ati,Tci,hughes, yank etc etc. You definitely get what you pay for. In my experience I couldn't talk down about boss hog without mentioning B&M in the same sentence.

Re: Turbo 350 problem

So do you guys think the torque converter could cause this problem ?, can it be tested ?

Re: Turbo 350 problem

Torque converters are sort of a voodoo art. For example You cant buy a converter off the shelf that will be exactly 2000 stall. It would be an 18-2200rpm stall. So many factors including the quality of parts and workmanship affect a torque converter they are tough to nail down. With what your describing it sounds like just a worn transmission. Have your air tested the drums? What is your clutch clearance within the drums? Clearance too loose could lead to a delay in actual gear apply because it takes too much fluid to fill the drum. Did you pull the pump apart? Also did you check line pressure before you pulled the unit apart?

Re: Turbo 350 problem

The trans only has about 3500 miles on it,the trans is fully stripped, everything looks new, pump is nice, the frictions have very little wear, I will check the clearances, the problem was intermittant, unfortunatley I didn't do a line pressure test before it was removed

Re: Turbo 350 problem

A tiny bit of trash in the valve body could also cause your issue. Its extremely difficult to nail down a problem like this after the fact especially over the internet. Hopefully Clinebarger will chine in here and throw out some ideas. Hes got a lot more trans experience than I do.

Re: Turbo 350 problem

Thanks Cableguy, I know what you mean it's a bit hard to nail down, I guess if I can find out what areas to look at for the specific problem then I can pay particular attention to them

Re: Turbo 350 problem

I had the same problem. Hesitate when put into reverse and engage hard after. Had it rebuilt and different torque convert, problem is gone - if that helps isolate your trouble.

You doing a good job, I would like to know when it does it? Like Fortvalley stated...If just after it sits...Converter drain back...Check Stator support bushings.
