265, 283 and 327 spark plugs

Do they all use different spark plugs? I bought a 1964 chevy c10 and previous owner just said it had a SBC. I found some rebuild paperwork from 1997 that states its a 265. But who knows if its been swapped since then.

Get the casting number off of the back of the block. Also along with the suffix code off of the machined pad in front of the passenger side cylinder head. Then you'll know what block you have.

I don't think the 265 came in any 1960's trucks... but I could be wrong.

You would be right Gary!!
Besides the fact that a 265 doesn't have any side mounts.
That's one of the ways to tell what it is.
An easy way is find the casting numbers or suffix codes to narrow it down.
Look here.

Where exactly on the back of the block are the
numbers located?

Re: 265, 283 and 327 spark plugs

In addition to the block numbers, you should also get the casting numbers from the heads. The spark plugs need to be correct for the particular heads being used.

The block casting numbers are on the drivers side.

These are numbers located behind the carb, infront of coil. 3877652 GM20
What are those. To get casting numbers, will I need to go under the truck?

Re: 265, 283 and 327 spark plugs

3877652 is the casting # of the INTAKE MANIFOLD. The # that is going to tell you what heads (and what plug you need) is under the rocker cover.

OK link didnt work so,,,

Here will show you where to look

Re: 265, 283 and 327 spark plugs

So I final found the numbers facing upwards tucked in. GM 3849852 which comes out to be a 283 57-66. How do I found out if its original to the truck?

Good chance it is. But after 50 years... who knows what it could have come from.

"Numbers matching" only counts with Corvettes and low production cars with special engine packages.

Re: 265, 283 and 327 spark plugs

Well, I guess I have to take the previous owners word and say that it was the factory V8.

Thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated.
