Removing a TH400 from a 71 C10

I'm about to remove my transmission for a rebuild.

Using information on this site I put together a short procedure for myself to ensure I don't damage the truck or myself... Please comment if you think I have got it nailed...

• Disconnect the battery
• Remove the dipstick. Remove top bell housing bolts accessed behind distributor
• lift truck as high as possible both ends and support with axel stands- drain oil from trans
• Remove the starter and remove the bolts that connect the torque converter to the flex plate
• Mark your driveline yokes so you know how it was oriented in the truck and remove the drive shaft. (I have the slide in yoke style)
• Remove the speedo assembly
• Remove the oil cooler lines - don't strip!
• Disconnect the transmission shifter linkage
• Check that the transmission will clear the exhaust system.
• Support the trans with a trolley jack under the pan and remove the rear mount and cross member.
• Remove the bolts around the bell housing and remove the dipstick tube.
• Support Motor, roll trans back on the trolley jack a couple of inches and lower the transmission. Man handle trans off jack and slide out from under truck
• Install the transmission using the above instructions in reverse order.

The transmission cross-member (rear support) will have to be unbolted from the frame, two 3/8" bolts each side and two 7/16" bolts in the center mount. THM400 has some electrical to disconnect, not sure if they use a vacuum line or not? You'll want to knock the transmission cross-member back once the bolts are out to clear the tail housing...Wrap the rear seal with a couple of baggies and rubber bands or tape, cuts down on the mess...

Thanks for the good advice.

You do not necessarily have to remove the starter
