Rear ring and pinion choice

My 72 currently has a spool rear end and I'm going to have it changed over to most likely a posi or maybe an open. I was wondering what gear would be best for my setup. Will be a once in a while cruiser.

The engine is a 2007 4.8 LS with a 4l60e trans. The rear tires will be 28.66 in diameter. I'm not sure what the overdrive ratio is for a 4l60e trans.

Can anyone help me with the formula for figuring this out? I was thinking on going with a 3:55 or 3:73.

Thanks

.7 on the OD ratio....I went from 3.42, to 3.73 (4.8 in an 02 silverado). Big difference in the pep/pulling power, she take a little more fuel around town, but on the open road @ legal speed , she does a tick better. The converter does not unlock pulling hills....Longhorn

Yes , rock stock, on the 02! Now my 69, runs a 5.3/Richmond 6 speed/3.42 gears. The tires are 29" tall.....& I still feel that it would be optimum , with a 3.73 gear set....longhorn
