The old hard drive is done

Yeah it’s been a good one. It just won’t work anymore. It’s been getting weak for a while now. I knew it wouldn’t be long before it quit altogether and it finally did. I can’t do anything with it. I cleaned it up real good hoping it might get up and go again but i give up. It’s done.
I went to see the doc and got fixed up.
A 7 did me good for a long time but now I’ve got a 10!
I used it a couple times and I think it might just be alright.

Windows. Windows 10 fellas.

I am no expert but Windows 10 seems better than earlier versions.

Re: The old hard drive is done

I've been using Windows since the time when it was just a program you loaded after booting DOS. Anybody else remember that? To me, each new Windows version gets worse and worse because they get rid of, rearrange, or hide things I used to know how to use

Glad you brought it back to life!

I had to replace the HD in my wife's computer a while back. Luckily I got it changed before it completely died and just made a rescue disk and Image backup and restored it to the new hard drive. Worked like a champ....

I walked among the dinosaurs too...... It was a great day when we could actually see something on the screen besides text.

It’s getting to the point I’d almost rather have DOS again. Been playing with Linux, it’s ok but talk about stuff not being where you expect it to be!

Re: The old hard drive is done

I sure liked 8 better than 10. Don't go far enough back with computers to know more of earlier versions. Just as said, they change things which makes it less user friendly and it seems that's because they want to do the things for you. "Please just let me decide where I go and what I want to do with my computer. I have no problem tapping the buttons all by myself. I see it as such little effort that any help in this regard is more like getting in my way than helping". I'm waiting for my computer to start turning itself on when it thinks I am going to want to use it.

I dread updates. That just means something I had down will now work differently when I felt everything was fine before. I use Firefox, so every time there is an update I get asked if I want Firefox as my default browser. YES, I STILL WANT FIREFOX AS MY DEFAULT BROWSER. I didn't change anything, you did. You stupid computer. Stop asking!

Well now it has come to when I try to set Firefox as my default browser it won't work. Every time I get online I get the box asking me and I have to X it out. This is a pain in the rear, but at least I used to know how to take care of it.

An SSD (solid state drive) is like an LS motor. Way faster.

The worst thing about it is, They don't have to move that stuff. They could leave the controls in the same place and new software or versions of it would be a lot more acceptable. I don't know why they can't figure that out.

Re: The old hard drive is done

had an old gateway, black and white spotted "cow computer" with Vista system.
I literally killed it last dec beating on it. when i say i do'nt want your frikkin' upgrades, i mean i don't want your frikkin upgrades...so i would punch the heck out of it and not get the upgrades.....alas, 10 yrs of beating severely on it finally did it in...lost everything on it, pics, vids...everything...after i took it outside and smashed it on the garage floor, wife asks what you going to do now...do'nt care, but it sure felt good hucking it full bore on the floor..almost therapeutic...
hate and i mean HATE my new HP pos, for most of the reasons already noted.
will say i am getting much more done not going on the frikkin thing, my interweb use has dropped to almost nothing...change sucks, why, WHY can't they just leave s**t alone??? not everyone wants all that carp, some of us just want a "dumb" computer that does what it's told...nothing else...

Re: The old hard drive is done

So tell us how you REALLY feel about it.

I know what you mean. I put off some of those phone updates as long as i can. After a while a couple of them installed themselves without my acceptance too. Guess we’ll be updated like it or not.
I don’t see all updates being to make our devices work better. More than likely they are only to keep up with what we are doing. Another one of those conspiracies i guess. Somewhere someone will read this and log it for possible use down the road....

Re: The old hard drive is done

I'm with Dawg. I want a flip phone version of a PC. Thankfully my iPad is holding on. My desktop is collecting dust. I bought a used laptop for at work. That may be a bad waste of $50

I just completely turn off all of the updates. I'm still using windows 7. You can still buy reconditioned computers with windows 7 from Newegg.Com . That's what I did the last time and it has been working great.

Windows 7 support is available to January 14, 2020. By then you should be on 10.

Re: The old hard drive is done

Windows 10 has been a reasonably decent operating system for my computers so far. Don't click on any free porn links, you should be OK.

Re: The old hard drive is done

I've been using Windows for work since 3.0 and actually saw a 2.x version running.
At home I use Linux because Windows is so bad and I don't care to pay for it.

Re: The old hard drive is done

I was happy with 7 but when the old one was acting up I bought another laptop with 8.1 or 2. I fooled with that thing for two weeks then took it back. The clerk asked what was wrong with it. I said windows 8! He said oh, yeah.. As most stores were pushing 8 at the time most said you could no longer buy new ones with 7. Wrong. A quick google found way plenty 7's still available and I ordered one. It's been fine until the last couple of months as the hard drive was failing. It finally got to where nothing I did helped. So I now have a laptop with 10 and so far I like it ok. It's strickly for pleasure so I don't spend a lot for these.
