Big block head ID...
I think it says 8993820.
boat anchors? some one said he had the casting list and would decode...just can't remember who it was. ![]() Yeah...I suffer from CRS. ![]() |

Ok...I suffer from CRS and sloppy notes.
So are these heads any good ona smaller big block...a 396/402? (still don't know which it is) |

some say the 820 heads are junk, some say they are ok. if i remember correctly, they are a smog head. they are similar to the 049 castings. the 820 heads are decent street heads. they are open chamber so on a 396/402, you won`t get much more that about 9 to 1. to get more compression from a 396/402, you need custom pistons or use high compression closed chamber pistons. you loose about 1 point of compression going from closed to open chambers.

454...365 hp LS-5 There's better BB heads, but these will make some decent HP for a semi-mild motor. LS-5's were no slouches... |

I looked all through Hollander and could not find that casting # ... I have to go to the machine shop this afternoon and will ask him if he knows .... jyd

Looked in the Production Engine Remanfactures Association book and those heads are listed in the chevy v-8 passenger section and say year 1972-68, cid 400-396, litre 6.6, bore 4.125, Description Big Block. It also lists 3969854, 3931063, and 3964290. Hope this helps.
