Epoxy primer after media blasting??
So my cab had been media blasted with glass awhile now. Still bare metal sitting in my garage on a pallet which is on two dollies. Time and money doesn't allow alot of time with the build.
But some available time and money has come up. Now the cab is rough throughout. I read about people say to use epoxy primer and that will smooth out the metal and allow any body work and ready for paint. Some say to sand the body smooth. I can't even run a rag over the body. What would be a proper/right/correct steps with dealing with a rough textured cab after glass media blasting?? I've asked on her before but got more confused with a replies. Maybe I just need step by step tutorial. 😆 Thanks again. I'm a man of many questions. |

Re: Epoxy primer after media blasting??
You could do a little sanding on it with some 240 or 320 sandpaper. Epoxy primer is the wise choice to go on over bare metal. Epoxy, bondo/filler, more epoxy, and then a 2K sandable primer is what I have done. Eastwood sells a good epoxy primer that is a lot cheaper than anything at the parts stores, just FYI.

Re: Epoxy primer after media blasting??
Yes to sanding, I use an electric 1/4 sheet palm sander, keep your project moving, epoxy is great. The nicer the body is to start with the better the finish. Summit also has a decent epoxy.

Re: Epoxy primer after media blasting??
Yes. My sandblaster primes with epoxy. Not only to fill and smooth, more because it will protect the metal same as paint for quite a long time. If you're not going to paint for a while you want to use epoxy.
Blasted parts I'm taking straight home to paint I only have them blast. I only clean the surface and just generally use etching primer (overkill here) or sandable/filling primer. I have never sanded the bare metal and all my painted pieces come out smooth and shiny as any. I want that roughed up texture because it grips the paint New take-offs Restored Epoxy primed

Re: Epoxy primer after media blasting??
Epoxy prime immediately, don't sand it...the rough texture is great for bonding the primer. Sand the cured epoxy before using body filler right on top of the epoxy primer. If no body filler, sand the primer before using high build primer. The sanding and high build will get rid of any rough texture left over from the media blasting process.
I forgot to mention...clean the bare metal best you can (not with water) before epoxy priming. I use a grease/wax remover. |

Re: Epoxy primer after media blasting??
No need to sand it, unless surface rust has started. Epoxy primer, ASAP. Two light coats, with proper flash time between. If you can't recoat within the recoat window, scuff it up with a green scotch bright before the second coat.
After the epoxy primer cures you could move the cab outside if you needed too. It is sealed.

Here's a basic primer on priming.

Re: Epoxy primer after media blasting??
If it were me, I would use acetone on a clean handtowel and simply do my best to get everywhere. The acetone is excellent for cleaning surfaces and evaporates nearly immediately.
I am sure someone else will chime in with another method.

Re: Epoxy primer after media blasting??
Here's another take.
http://www.spiuserforum.com/index.ph...ed-metal.1360/ The first post here talks about the correct process to use when wiping things down. There are several posts further in the thread that seem to apply in your case. http://www.spiuserforum.com/index.ph...to-paint.6622/

Re: Epoxy primer after media blasting??
I use the SPI products and after blasting, I have usually used 80 grit on a DA to remove some/most of the roughness, only where it was really easy to do so. I do use a 3 inch in places the 6 inch won't work.
I have then flooded it with the SPI 700 water based cleaner and wiped where I could without getting the rag snagged on the rough surface and flooded the rough areas with more cleaner and blown dry. Then spray the SPI Epoxy. Haven't had a problem yet. |

Re: Epoxy primer after media blasting??
I sandblasted mine which left a fine sand paper type surface. I immediately applied an etching primer which smothed it right out. Then applied 2k primer. Worked great for me.
