Removing rust from chrome rims and polishing.
So my chrome rims are starting to show signs of rust. Has anybody removed rust and polished their wheels themselves?

Re: Removing rust from chrome rims and polishing.
I've used Brasso, or Silvo polish on chrome and had good results.
I've also used 0000 steel wool and windex on a GMC headlight bezels & grill and bumper that I eventually replaced. Gotta be very gentle with the steel wool. It didn't appear to scratch the chrome, but it does nothing for the pits. I wouldn't use steel wool on aluminum trim. I've heard that applying wax after cleaning helps as a barrier between the metal and the elements to prevent or at least slow down the rust coming back. I'm not telling you to go the steel wool route, just reporting my experience.

This stuff works. Even safe on clear coat. I used with a wheel and cordless drill on a couple of bumpers and then waxed them. I've had rust on chrome wheels where your showing and it's an ongoing fight. |

![]() I've been using steel wool with car wax paste in a separate can to avoid contaminating the wax that I use on my paint job with steel wool threads. Seems to do a decent job and it really isn't noticeable rolling down the road (I don't think) but I know it's there and once that moisture gets under the chrome and etches it you gotta keep on top of it or or it will just get worse all that much sooner. ![]() Last edited by BRL; 05-08-2024 at 04:44 AM. |

I just used something similar that was marketed for aluminum. It did exactly as described in your URL. It did require some elbow grease for sure but the result was very nice. Not sure how it would do against rust on chrome but it did just fine removing a lot of crap off aluminum. -Kevin

Re: Removing rust from chrome rims and polishing.
Coca-Cola and crumpled up aluminum foil will clean that right up. Follow up with soap and water, rinse, dry, and wax.

Re: Removing rust from chrome rims and polishing.
Yeah I've heard about people using aluminum foil with good success.
I've been posting pictures on this forum from my phone and I just checked the picture on my tablet and noticed the dang picture came out so big that the tire was almost life-sized...oops. Anyway I took another picture and no, it's really not noticeable from any sort of distance. |
