You can get a load leveler for about $40 at Harbor Fright...it comes with 2 lengths of chain about 4' or so. I've got several different lengths that I've accumulated over the years so I just grab what is handy, but you won't need much for pulling an engine/tranny. I would think 3' would do the trick...

If doing it the traditional way you just need a peice long enough to reach from a bolt hole on the front of one head to a hole on the back of the other head. A 3' peice is plenty.

Unless your pulling the engine out of that big yellow dump truck, then you may need a few more dozen feet of chain.
