69 Chevy points to HEI troubles

I pulled my 69 out today. She turns over just fine, but acts like it has no spark. I pulled the #1 plug, and there is "some" spark, but not what I believe there should be. I pulled the battery lead off the distributor and there is 12.4 volts with the key on...and only 8.6 volts when it is cranking. Is that correct? Any suggestions? Thanks.

yup, you need to clip out the resistor wire(white cloth), & remove the yellow wire from the starter. If you look at the fuse box, you will find a spot that says IGN unfused.....you can run a wire from there to feed the dist(it will be full batter voltage). i would go 10 or 12 guage wire , & route through a grommet on the firewall. some guys add a circuit breaker or fuse to the line. 12 volts

I just ran a wire straight from the battery to the battery input on the HEI. I still only get 8.5 volts in the crank position. I get the full 12+ with the switch one. Maybe the battery is bad??? Thanks Ryan

Maybe your battery has a weak cell, have it checked (saw today that autozone does this for free) before you replace it. My first thought was that you didn't remove the resistor wire for the old points style ignition too. Check the voltage at the battery while in the start position, if it's a full 12V and you have 8.5 at the other end of the wire then you have a problem with the hei bat. wire or connections. Maybe corrosion or a bad crimp etc. Good luck. Hey, I see you're in Waldorf not too far from here.

We jsut finished doing this..we ran a 12 guage wire to the unfused plug ont he fuse box...worked like a charm!
