Just won a biiiiig truck on ebay. Questions abound.

I've been looking for a bigger truck to use during the summer when I'm pulling old cars & trucks out of fields and fixing them up to sell, and I found one on ebay:

1968 C50, Small block, 5 speed, white (ugh! that'll get changed soon), currently has a fiberglass utility box on it.

Bid $450, won at $103.50.

After I bid (I bid right after the auction went up) the seller added that it has an IL junk title, which (supposedly) means it can't be retitled. I could part the truck (which I don't really want to do but could profit from) or I could swap a 67-72 light duty truck body onto this big heavy frame and use that title (which is technically legal as I understand it but a lot of work and money).

However, I've heard of less than moral individuals (aka used car dealerships) retitling junk-titled vehicles that have been in floods, so would it be possible for me to have it inspected somehow (either in IL or here in MN) and retitled as a road vehicle so I could use it for my own personal use in moving junkers? Would I be better off getting a bill of sale from the seller and claiming he lost the title and applying for a lost title here in MN? Would that cause problems at the DMV if it has an existing junk title in IL?

I have the option available to me from a local junkyard, assuming I can get this truck roadworthy again, to buy a full hydraulic car/truck wrecker setup off of the back of a '69 C30 that he has sitting in his yard for $250 (nobody else has even inquired about it, apparently, and he'll cut it off and load it for me at no additional charge, and it worked when he put the truck out to pasture a few months ago ). Are the frame widths the same, and if not how much fabbing/modifying would I have to do to make the wrecker setup fit on the back of the big truck?

Seller says truck has a 5-speed, what transmission would this be? Is it an overdrive? Would it fit in my '72 C10 if I decided to part the truck?

What kind of rear end would this truck have?

Anybody interested in the fiberglass utility box?

Anybody passing thru or near Moro, IL with an empty trailer towards MN anytime soon?

Anything I should worry about or check on the big truck when getting it running again?

Hey, the body swap would be a big project, the front fenders, hood,and radiator support are completely different. The cab has a set back firewall in the center, I think, and the doors and rockers are different to make room for the bigger front tire and fenders. The door just has the lower front corner cut off, but the rockers are 4 or 5 inches shorter. I put a heavy truck cab on a pickup frame once, but going the other way would take some work. Check with your DMV, may just be able to have it inspected and re-titled in your state. I have a C-60 with a big block 366 and a 5 speed, that trans is a heavy unit for heavy trucks...not an overdrive. Good luck, looks like you got it cheap enough. Gord

Not all states pass along "junk vehicle" title declarations.

I purchased a car two years ago with an Ohio title that stated it was a rebuilt junked car. Well Michigan issued a normal title. I would recommend doing a little research, perhaps the title can go to another state and be registered in someone else's name there. Then it can be "sold" to you and registered in your state in your name.

I would start by calling your DMV/Secretary of state and see what they have to say about the title.

Did the P.O. state WHY the title says junk/whatever? Did the seller just sell it after getting it from someone else? Just register it, or call your DMV and ask them!!

What is the GVW? According to my '69 Truck Data Book (and this is for '69's, but may work for your '68): Transmission code is M75: NP 540CL (with 292 6-cyl); NP 541CD (350/17,000lb 2-speed rear axle); NP 541 CL (350/single speed rear axle)
If the tranny code is M77: Clark 285V (w/350 or 366 only); Clark 282V (close ratio w/350 or 366 and 2-speed rear axle.
If the tranny code is M76: Spicer 3152F (w/350 or 366); or Spicer 3152A close ratio (w/350 or 366 and 2-speed rear axle.
Note: 350 not available until '69. So, it would probably have a 327 or a 366, if not a 292 6-cyl. AT this point in time, I would be surprised if the original engine is still in it.

Axle ratio should be 6.17:1, if not equipped w/air brakes. If it is a 15K or 17K cap'y 2-speed, the axle ratios will be 6.50/8.85 OR 7.17/9.76:1.

Do you mean semi-trailer? I don't think that think is going to fit on a regular car trailer :p

When I hauled the '42 Dodge 1 1/2 ton duallie I used to own from my home to michigan my dads '89 1-ton 4x4 and a gooseneck 32ft flatbed (dual axle), was more than enough. Put the duals behind the humps in the trailer and it rode real nice too (well, except for going up steep hills...that 350 is a little tired after 170k miles). Only real problem that we encountered is that a certain dumb father drove up the driveway at a bad angle without paying attention and bent his LH bedside a little. Coming home was sure fun - that truck gets to 85 MPH in a hurry with no load on the trailer.

Anybody got a Gross GVW on this thing? Is C50 a 2, 2.25, or 2.5 ton?

in illinois its a crime to sell a vehicle with a salvage title or a junking certificate to someone from out of state without having a salvage vehicle buyers identification card from out of state. in other words you would need to be a salvage dealer in your state to buy a salvage vehicle from out of state.

second, you stated that the seller did not list that it had a junking certificate until after you bid, is that correct?



in illinois, once a vehicle hasd been issued a junking cert. it can not be transfered back to a salvage title, etc.


the only option that i think you might have is to completely rebuild the truck. the illinois state police will usually stamp aframe VIN to correspond with a body vin if you have all the paperwork in order.

if i was you i would contact your Secretary of State Police and ask them what your options are. The ILLINOIS SECRETARY OF STATE POLICE may also be able to help you out. A general number for them is: (217)782-7126.

i am a police officer that has towed many abandoned vehicles and applied for many junking certificates. if i can be of help, let me know.

One time, I put a vehicle together from junk and spare parts. The title was for the frame, the vin # on the cab didn't match what the title said. Long story short, I had to take everything down to the DMV, stand in every line they had, spend eight hours explaining things, but when I left, I had a 'Utah Reconstructed Vehicle' title, and they removed the vin plate from the door jam and put in a new one that matched the title. It must not happen to often, that title was only #486 or so.

Can I face any penalty for bringing it to my home and ripping it apart and selling the parts? Assuming if I get pulled over I show them the bill of sale and not the junk certificate? Seller was unclear if its a junk cert or a junk title I emailed and asked but no response yet.

Even in another state? What if I played dumb, got a bill of sale, pretend the truck never came with a junk certificate and reapplied for a title in MN? Would it come up in another states computer system or is it something the state of minnesota wouldn't keep track of?

The idea behind getting this truck was to avoid spending a huge amount of cash, so that wouldn't be the first thing I'd prefer to do. As is, the truck has no body damage (except some rust), and with a little fixing should run and drive (I asked about getting it on the trailer). Being that its in an impound lot I assume it was abandoned or repo'd. Not sure what is involved in rebuilding the truck - if it was repaired to good looking condition and met all DOT standards would it qualify as "rebuilt"?

My current daily driver ('72 C10) I bought out of an impound lot here in Mn where it was parked illegally and never claimed. I got the truck at a discount (ebay) and retitling it was almost as easy as a regular title transfer

Hey thats a neat truck! I used to use one of them (with a hydraulic bucket) for cable tv years ago. Great design for storage for all my cable (line parts & tools) stuff.

C/60- 2 1/2 ton

At least that's what my Granddad told me. He used to work on and drive a bunch of 69 and 70 C/50 and C/60 gin pole trucks for a water well service. I'd like to get a hold of one of those old trucks just for the heck of it, I just don't have room for one.
