gmc vs. chevy?

just a question here, and no fighting! i have noticed that more than a few guys and gals here are quick to say that they have or will change their truck to a chevy if all they can get is gmc. well i will be the first to say i love chevy as much as the next guy. my first truck was a 74 chyenne super 1/2 ton w/ 454 and had over 10,000 gvw. it was a real heavy truck but i loved it. so i have to ask why? what is it about gmc's that some people have against them? i personally think that a lot of good gmc's are being thrown aside. here in virginia where i live there are only a few that i have seen running around.( honestly about 10 including mine) but i see 67-72 chevy's every day or every other day. hey i like looking at both of them but from a rare breed point of view the gmc's stand alone. so now i opened this can of worms, so lets here some feedback!

When I bought my 72 Jimmy, it already had a 70 Chevy doghouse on it. Couldn't complain though 'cause I just prefer the chevy look to the 4 headlight GMC grill. I think most of it has to do with availability of replacements. Since chevs outnumbered GMC's about 3 to 1, I'd say if you needed a front clip, it was probably easier to find the chev part than a GMC.

i agree that part availability does favor chevy but....if part availability was equal would it make a difference? exterior parts are about equal now.

At this point, it's probably more of a personal prefference thing. Like I said, the GMC nose just doesn't appeal to this guy.

in my opinion the gmc looks better with the 4 headlights, and most important real men drive gmc's. chevys are for little boys

Definitely gotta love the GMC grill! I used to be a diehard chevy man, but since I bought my GMC I have been converted.

Ok. I'll play.
My first 67 - 72 was a 72 GMC. I loved it.
But . . . . when I learned of the diffrences between the rear suspension setup (the trailing arm / coil spring setup) and how much better I liked the coil rear and the ease of lowering and the smooth ride.
I turned CHEVY also.

I must add however that I LOVE the front end on the GMC's!

GMC's were offered with coil spring rear suspension. Maybe I misunderstood your post?
I was a huge fan of the 71 and 72 Chevy front clip 'till I found my '72 GMC and have loved the chomed steel (no plastic inserts) grill ever since. All the 67-72 front clips were cool.

I just prefer the look of chevy over gmc because of gmc looks kinda dorky, like they can't quit live upto the "chevy" standard.
IMO

"chevy standards", "dorky" - come on.....

I love the 4 headlights, especially when someone has cut me off. The front end of the GMC looks tougher to me. And the leaf springs are the best. I actually 4 wheel and like leafs - anyday. BUT, if it was only for a street vehicle, I would opt for the coil Chevy.

Wasn't GMC the luxury line and Chevy the more average line of vehicle??? Atleast that's what me grandfather used to tell me.

GMC all the way. Not just because I own one, either...that was just coincidence that I found it. But I guess I should specify, 69 and 70 GMC's are IMO the best looking. I don't like the skinny trim around the grille in earlier years, and I dont like the black stripes on 71-72 grilles. That being said, I also like the 67-68 Chevy grille...a very close 2nd.

camelot gmc was the tougher of the 2, gmc was marketed as awork truck while chevy was aimed more toward weekend warriors.

70 had the black stripes to. on my truck they are so faded that it is hard to tell but they are there

there are the small black stripes around the headlight pods on all years of the GMC grill (i think) but only 71 and 72 had the black stripe that went down the middle and was really wide. i think its yucko.

i stand corrected. i dont really mind it. last year i drew a 71-2 gmc short step 4x4 that was based on a 69 chevy 4x4 short step and because the only decent pic i had of a gmc grill was out of the lmc catalog and it was one with the stripe in the middle.

I recently found out about that black strip on the '72 grill [:-). Mine had faded off on one grill and the other grill had been spray painted black. I like it now that I know about it - it really brings the flat black paint together with the chrome grill and rust.

I personally would rather have a GMC. dont get me wrong here. I enjoy all 67-72s. its just that I prefer to be the odd ball. there is only about 3 GMCs around here compared to the uncountable Chevys. I also like the grill on my 68. it is still in very good shape & is argent silver. dont care too much for the chrome ones, they are just too big for chrome. does anything look nicer than a GMC grill & bumper almost dragging the ground?
as far as rear suspension goes, I thought GMCs came standard with leafs but could be had with coils. and vice-versa for Chevy.
