LED Taillight kits on E-bay
I found these LED tail light kits on e-bay. Is this a board member selling these? Has anyone tried these kits? What are the other options?

I am going to watch this post with great interest! I, too am very interested as to whether these things work well or not. For the price, they should be guaranteed forever.

I saw someone post them for sale on the board a year or so ago, but haven't seen them since, and can't remember who it was.

I was flippin' through a JC Whitney catalog the other day and saw a neat LED set up. It was round and flat with a bunch of red LEDs in it and plugged in just like the original bulb. Not sure if they would work but I think the cost was around 20-30 bucks.

You can pick up LED replacements for the 1157 bulbs at most decent autoparts stores. I've heard that some aren't even as bright as the original bulbs. Does anyone have any suggestions or feedback on the LED's that plug in?

There was a board member that was making a LED set-up. If I'm not mistaken, they made an exclusive deal with one of the big vendors (Brothers ?) and were no longer allowed to sell them themselves.

As far as the LEDs that plug into the stepside round lights you find at the parts store, I tried the ones that replace the 1157. DON'T do it. The light bulb plugs in at an angle. LED's are meant to be viewed straight on and have very little side light. When you plug them in and put the lense on you can barely see the light. We will have to wait for a better alternative.

Has anyone tried to modify the round led lights the truckers are using? They look to be close enough in size to modify and they ought to be plenty bright.

$120 + $10 to ship. Same as ECE. Last edited by PICKMUP; 07-30-2004 at 06:30 PM. |

Don't the lights need to be DOT approved? I've heard of some legal problems with the 1157 replacements. I will say one thing for the replacements, they hold up well in a lighted hitch cover. The regular bulbs would blow out fairly quick due to the vibration. The LED replacement hasn't blown out yet. I wouldn't use it to replace a regular tail light bulb though.

Krue,
Not yet, but I've thought of that too. I just think they might be too deep for our light housings. Shawn

I am sorry for my long absence! I have been extremely busy.
If anyone has any questions about the lights I helped to develop, please email me! I sell to Frank (above) and Early Classic, or I also sell them myself, but you'll probably get a better deal through Frank or ECE. Otherwise, Email me @ joel_mac5@yahoo.com

I know Longhornman (Andy) is supposed to be working on the round ones using the truckstop round LED circuit boards. How 'bout an update Andy?

The ones that ece sells are the best ive seen. I bought the 1157 replacements from the site posted above and wasnt happy with the way they look. The stock bulbs actually looked better infact. In addition to the led's youll also need a special flasher but thats no big deal. I am in the process of changing EVERY SINGLE bulb in my truck to led's and havent run into too many problems except the one in my speedo which is an lcd. I'll keep you guys posted on what i find. Right now im thinking that $120 bucks for the ece tail lights is a pretty good deal considering the cost to make a comparable set would run you around the same or more ..... leds are NOT cheap and the set ece sells is packed with them. You do the math and youll probably come to the same conclusion.

If you buy LEDs in bulk, you can make the sets cheaper... Radioshack grossly charges more than a bulk outlet would...
