Truck Tilt vs. Van tilt
What's the big deal with putting in a van tilt? So so many people go after the truck tilt because they originally came in trucks? What is the difference if there is any, and how hard is it to install either one of these? Thanks in advance!

The can tilt has a longer shaft, so you have to compress the shaft that is in the engine compartment, but that is not hard to do.
You also have to move the nuetral safety switch down. And the van tilt has a flat connector but your truck has a round one, so you will ahve to get an adapter. There are some older threads that outline it, I will see if I can find them.

What year van tilts fit easily. I know of an 84 or 85 I can get.

The older vans actually had the horse shoe shaped plug, and the correct long shifter. The later ones which are more abundant have a short shifter which looks 10 times better behind most after market...or late model steering wheel.
The vans that are almost a direct swap are 72 - 81. I think there were a hand full of 82's with the old column...or maybe it was the 3/4 and one ton trucks in 82 that still had it, but I know my first tilt came off an 82. The 82/83 and up have the ignition switch in the column, wiper controll, high beams, and all this is placed in a much larger column which won't fit under your inst. panel without some real work. |

Motorhome tilts are the same length as the truck ones, so no mods to the steering intermediate shaft required.
Must move neutral safety though, just like van. You ever see a motorhome without a tilt column? Me neither. I put one in my 70, and it works great.

Tx Firefighter, you are absolutly right on the motor home tilt.
you ask when was the last time you saw a motorhome without a tilt... I ask how often do you see a motor home in the junk yard. |

I have seen motorhomes in junkyards. 99% of the time, they are burned to the frame.

All right then smart guys. Just forget I mentioned the motorhome deal at all. You keep looking for van tilts, just like all the other knuckleheads out there. Texas must be in a special vortex of opportunity, because I've seen motorhomes in several junkyards, and never yet found one with the steering column gone out of it.
Myself, it's just another tool in my toolbox of tricks to build these trucks cheaper than the rest of the guys doing them. Knowlege is power.

I work on a lot of motorhomes that should be in the junk yard. ever hear of "Revcon"?
'82 & up motor homes have the later larger column. some of the mid 70's ones had the shifter on the dash of all places!
