Dealer-installed PTO winch/bumper?
Does anyone have one? Ever seen one? I know they were more common in the 50s and 60s, just wondering if there is a "period-correct" setup that would go on our trucks.

This is what a factory installed winch looks like on a 60-66 truck/burb.
This shot is from the July 1965 issue of Four Wheeler magazine, written by Peter Kokalis. The entire article is on the 60-66 GMC Truck Site. http://www.6066gmctrucks.org/ Anyone ever seen something similar to this on a 67-72? Bob

From what I've been able to find about the earlier factory mounted winches was that they were made by Braden, the driveshafts were Spicer and the PTOs were made by Chelsea. Is yours a front mounted or are you talking about the winch in the back? A rear winch for the wrecker would must likely have been installed by the upfitter that built the wrecker. Do you have any pics?
Bob

1972C10,
Do you know if your friend's winch came with the frame extensions that are shown in the pic? Bob

Dealer installed winches could be Braden, Ramsey or the Koenig King, I have seen several Ramsey winches that were dealer installed and should have some pics somewhere.

Thanks for posting those pics, it shows really well how the driveshaft is routed. The winches mounted up higher and behind the bumper must have had the driveshafts going through the front crossmember or at least very close to the bottom of it.

Is your pto on the tranny or transfer case? Looks like the transfer case. Have you ever had to replace the u-joints in the pto driveshafts?
One last thing, could you give a brief discription of operation?

Here's some pics of a Ramsey pto winch that was dealer installed on a 71 burb, this one had the in cab controls but I lost the pics of them.
Please excuse the use of lift blocks on the front, this was not my burb. |

The PTO runns off the transfer case. To engage it, you must put the transfer case in N then the tranny in N. There is a knob under the dash just to the right of the collum, pull that out and that engages the PTO. Then using R and D, that brings the cable either in or out. Ill try and get some more pictures soon.

That's a pretty new one. The two old ones I have don't have the covers for checking backlash.
