Best Kit for Disc Brakes
Looking for opinions on the best (affordable yet reliable) kit for disc brakes.

new parts or used?If you go used 71-87 truck stuff will work.you will need to change your ball joints to the newer ones.This swap is cheap and easy.look in faq board for all the details.

i am going the used route, got my full front crossmember for free, and have 550 into brake hoses, ball joints, tie rods, and 6 lug rotors(didnt want to change to 5 lug)

I used front end from 1975 GMC and it works great. Wasn't too bad of price since 1970's trucks are all over the boneyards.

Define affordable. If you're asking that, than the OEM stuff will be the way you'll want to go. Want better? Then look at the Baer or Wilwood stuff. My preference is for Baer but they are both good. You'll be looking at a starting price of at least $1000 for a front kit. Price dependent on options of course. Even a kit from MP Brakes with 2 1/2" drop spindles will run you $1100.

I'm talking brand new, a whole kit (hoses/calipers/6 lug rotors/pads/master cylinder/booster/prop. valve/stock spindle) which manufacturer is everyone using? Thanks

I got my kit through GMCPAULS and it was great to put on, everything you needed. One of the easiest installs I have done.

CPP is the way to go.
I have done a good deal of shopping on this very topic and CPP
has had the best price every time. I have their 5 lug front disc kit waiting to be installed on my 70 right now and a little later I will probably purchase their rear wheel disc kit. Right now their shipping dept. is 5 days behind, but they have been very prompt with my 2 previous orders.

Just my biased opinion, I did the salvage yard approach with a 75 front end, but I like ECE. About every 3rd call I talk to Dave. I just like that.

I used a yard set-up from a 71 GMC. Got it all plus the power booster, proportioning valve and brake lines for $150. I pressurewashed and sanded everything then painted it black. I spent about $300 more on new rotors, calipers, ball joints, bearings, bushings, tie rods, brake hoses etc.... Don't recall the prices, but I think it saved me a lot of money over a kit, especially with the power booster....but if you want drop spindles, a kit is the way to go......

I narrowed my choices to CPP and ECE, and after talking to both at length, I went with ECE. I didn't like the fact that CPP's kit made you change the ball joints, and it didn't come with everything. I would have still needed to buy the master cylinder and prop valve and dust shields separately, which made it more than ECE's kit. Plus, all of the parts in the ECE kit were name brand, and the guy from CPP wouldn't even tell me who made their stuff.
I couldn't be happier with my truck, the brakes work better than i ever thought possible. |
