The majic number 165365.5??
I went to the local tax office to buy tags for my truck and had to wait inline for the drive through. Then all of sudden "bang" the motor just dies. Okay no problem, it always starts right back up. Crank, crank, crank and crank. Hey the motor is spinning too easy. Did a quick check on a few things and found nothing. I suspect the timing chain broke!! I could not verify since I did not have tools with me and the other people inline would not help me push my truckout of the line. I should have just left it there. Luckly a guy putting a sign, IN A SUITE, helped me push my truck into a parking space. Wait almost 2 hours for a tow truck. Could 165365.5 miles be the end of the 305? That lil 16 second boat anchor sure has come along way since 113000 miles when I bought the truck. If this it the end, the 383 will be on order shortly. I'll start tearing up the truck to rebuild the front end then drop in the tire shredder.
Stay tuned folks...there may be hundreds of pictures coming soon. |

Maybe you can finally start that engine you've been talking about for how many years now?

easy way to tell if the timing chain broke, pull the dist. cap!! have someone watch the rotor, and if it doesnt turn when you crank engine, then chain is history or you broke the cam!!!
hope this helps Dan

If you want to do it again, I have a 305 HO that has less than 30k on it. It's still sitting in my 84 Z-28....

I agree, I don't want to be "forced" to replace mine anytime soon...I want to save up and build a decent replacement...

I won't argue with that Jeremy. It is true. However, Gerardo's 305 was getting real good mileage. I believe he posted somewhere he was getting 17 to 22 mpg on a trip or two. Those are really good numbers for either 305 or 350s but the 383 will not match those. It will be fun to drive though!
Happy New Year!

Yup, ~18 MPG @70. I won't see those numbers ever again unless I go FI. HMMMMM??? Doesn't mean I won't try to squeeze every MPG out of the new engine. What I need is help to push the truck into the garage. The tow truck could not get me close enough because they would not take responsibility for breaking the front air dam. Truck is just too low. I did not look at the truck all weekend. Poor truck just sat in the driveway. Once I move the truck into the garage I will look into the problem. Without my tools I just don't know if my initial guess of the timing chain is correct. I'll definately know by the end of the week. I want to go to San Antonio and checkout a few machine shops. Especially one that has experience in GM FI setups.

I dropped a 383 into mine and with the upgrade on the tranny and rear gears, I did not hurt the mileage from what the 305 was given me. The power curve is much better and the truck is more aggressive on the street. God bless the 305, may I never have another one.

If you ever need a hand, just let me know G. Even if just to push it in to the garage, since I don't really have too much knowledge. :p
