Posi unit question
Need information on Auburn Posi units for my 12 bolt. Just called Pyle Brothers nea Houston. I want them to rebuild the rear with all new parts.
He said they would use an Auburn posi. Weird thing was he said not to do a burnout while holding the brakes. He said something to the effect that since Auburn's are cone style units (they grow with inertia to lock the axles) it would grenade the rear if that was done a lot. Well, that got me wandering if Auburns are all that good now. Dont get me wrong, I dont hold the brake when burning out for very long. Get it spinning and let off the brake.. Anyone have issues the Auburn posi? Should I look into an Eaton unit? Any information on Auburn posi reliability appreciated.. Thanks James |

I have no idea about the Auburn unit but that does not sound quite right. If you can't do a smokey-burnout down to the lug nuts...what is the sense of having a posi...LOL! Just my 0.02!

Randy's Ring & Pinion and Tom's Differentials seem to be recommending the Eaton over the Auburn units also.
The Eaton's are rebuildable and the rebuild kits are cheap. Supposedly the Eaton is superior to the Auburn. I've seen several Auburn units in 4th gen camaro rears and some work ok, some don't last long. Don't have personal experience with either one yet, but I'm leaning towards the Eaton for my build. If I can afford it, maybe the new Detroit "soft" locker (almost $600 though).

do not get that auburn unit you will break it. they wear out a lot faster than the eaton units and the cone units actually wear into the carrier itself so they arent rebuildable you have to buy a whole new unit while with the eaton you can just put in new clutches when they wear out which by the way will be a good long while

I've done some more looking on the internet. It looks like Eaton is the way to go. Seems Auburn units dont hold up well if there is a lot of wheel spin.
I've also read the new Eaton's are l alot stronger than the ones that came factory in the cars and trucks in the 60s and 70s. Thanks for all your replies. It confirmed my feeling to go with Eaton. James |

71cadc10 suggested Tom's Differentials. I don't know exactly the price but apparently they are somewhat cheap for a stock unit from Eaton. But of course, you can add option to the unit and that'll jack the price up..

Auborn has 2 different types of chunks, Pro Series or High Performance. I have been running an auborn pro series chunk for about 6 years now. My truck has some major spinning issues and I have never had a problem out of it. My weak link was my gears.
