Question 700R4 to NP241??

Well I'm not getting much positve feedback on using the NP205 with a stock (unmodified) 700R4 trans., so I've been wondering if it will be a whole lot less trouble to just go with an NP241?? Has anybody done this or have any data on this combo??

From what I read, the NP241 is available in a drivers side and passengers side front output shaft? Is it possible to use a drivers side output in a 71/72 frame??
I can get a really good deal on a Dana 44 with drivers side Diff. housing and was wondering if it could be made to work with a small block chevy motor/ 700R4 trans setup??

Any feedback would be great,

What are You looking for as far as the 700-205 combo?You would need a 350/205 transfer,or you would need to change the input.You would need a different shaft for the 700 that You can buy from advanced adapters.You would need to move the engine forward or the transfer backwards 1 3/4".That's the basics.I don't know anything about the 241

Thanks Mike, I know what I would need to do to use the NP205, I just don't want to pay someone to tear apart a perfectly fine, NEW, Bowtie Overdrives 700R4 thats still under warrantee. And then theres the cost of Advance Adapters parts, BIg Bucks$$$!!! From what I've learned, the expense to make that combo work would be HUGE $$$.

So I'm looking at other ways to use my 700R4 in its current state and hook it to a T/C. At this point I really don't care what T/C as long as it will work in a 72 frame.

Thanks for the input, its good to hear from another local member of this board. We should get together sometime and talk 'trucks',

Isn`t there an outfit that makes a 700R4 to TH350 adaptor that can be used to do the opposite for about $70?

72longbed,what part of south east?I am off Boot road between Dtown and West Chester.Maybe You should look into a divorced case like 1 tons had.

Do a search,there was info here in the last few weeks.The adaptor is intended to be used to replace the 700R4 with a TH350.But the topic here was saying they used it to swap a 700R4 in place of a TH350.

two board members, Bhull2 and Hugger67 both bought that adapter with the intention of putting a 700R4 together with a NP205, this was about two months ago I think. Both of them said they would be reporting their success along with Pics right away. Never heard anything from either one of them since! Tends to lead me to believe that they didn't make it work or are having trouble with the operation.

Until I know that the NP205 can readily and in-expensively be mated to a 700R4, I'm going to look into using the T/C that GM used on a 700R4 (NP241), and cut down on my agravation.

Just need to decide if I want to go with drivers side or pass. side front output, and the front Dana that I choose will probably determine that. Since I'm going to use a Radius Arm / Coil Spring front suspension, I need to figure out what Ford truck has the right size (width) Dana 44 to fit my 72 C20?? This is where the guys with the "Universal" truck knowledge can really help me.

If you go with a 700/241. Both drivers and pass drop use factory adaptors. Pass drop will fit without any major mocifications and the 241 is fairly strong. I have a 90 3/4 ton and I use it for towing without any problems with the 241. ILf you go with a drivers drop, of course you will have to change the front axle to a ford, and redo the exhaust sysytem. The front end you will have to use has to come out of an earlier ford say from 77-80 leaf spring style. This is a direct bolt in and you can use the chevy brakes if put together correctly. Either way you are talking bank for the conversion. The easiest will be to fork out some money for the longer 205 adaptor to the 700. With the longer adaptor you do not have to bust the 700 open and will not affect the warranty. I didn't even get into the shifters and drivlines with the 241 swap.

what do mean "longer adapter"?? Is this the same part that hugger67and Bhull2 are trying to use??

If I go with a Ford Dana it will have to be one that has the front coil perches and Radius arm mounts intact. I figure this will cut down on a ton of R&D and Fab. work on my part? Were there any Ford Dana's that had these requirements stock out of the factory, or at least one out of the two that I need?? BTW, I need to stick with 8 lug rotors on this front Dana.
