Talking Bed Floor Progress

hey all. Attached are my progress photos to date. the first pic is the mess that i found when i sliced the sides off of the cross pieces so that i could get the spot weld cutter in there. & as you can see, this is why the all rust out! look at that ball of rust/dust & ice in there all combing to do their evil deed.
the second pic is a good example of what I am finding most of the time - solid bed floor.
the third is what i'm finding the rest of the time... looks like i got some patching to do...
4th, look at the pile of metal i now am ammasing!

lastly, heres my plan. new tubular supports! stronger, less likely to collect crap, & cooler. I'm gonna cap the ends & weld a tube through where the bolts go through.

I'll post more as I go further. what ya think? suggestions? (yes, I know it would have been easier to start with a good steel floor, but i couldnt find one & this will be a workin truck so steel over wood wins)

My floor is reverse rust of yours, great c-members lousy floor. I have a floor from a 79 that I think I can weld in some patches. The grooves seem to line up in the floor between the two of them. It's wierd how these trucks rust in different areas from one to the other !

Talking update

Well, I've got more done. The first pic is the front of the bed where i wirewheeled the bed at the tubing to metal. pic two is a zinc galvanizing paint I'm using - you can weld right through this stuff but it spatters more. pic three is the tube welded shot at the end with a half of a piece of 2.5" exhaust tubing, painted & welded in place. pic 4 is a pic of one of my welds & the last is a pic of a piece of donour bed that is willing to give its life for the cause. what ya think? comments welcome...

thanx Greg. Yes it is for the green truck. did you see the post where I got the front half off the sheetmetal done? I drove it out @ -36 np. I must now construct a bed a little at a time... as for the chills, Oh man i got em! i can barely type! & i have the shakes too! the only cure for the chills is at least 4 beer per day...

more pics

update -
Well I've been busy as a beaver & look at my progress:
the first is a patch for some rot just in front of the wheel wells & its a difficult spot because its where the ribs tapper off
2nd is that piece welded up.
3rd is the other side where the rot was worse & i had to replace the edge of the bed as well as the tapered section
4th & 5th is the middle of the bed that was too wavy and rotted to use & so it's the patches tacked in.

Talking three more pics

three more:
I've got all the patches welded in 100% & welds gound flat where the crosspieces go. I then caped more 2" x 3" x 72", 1" x 2" x 72" & 50" x 3/4" x 2 1/4" (3 pieces of 3/4 tube welded together) tubular steel. I painted the spots where the sand blaster wont be able to get to later on for the line-x to prevent rot & I welded them in. The last pic is where i welded a tube through the 2 x 3 where the holdown bolt goes so no water or crap will be able to collect.

Soon I'll start on the rear 1/4 of the bed & I think theres less rot there & it may go easier. Questions? What ya think?

Looks good, when is it hitting the streets?

Did you have any problems getting the ribs from 2 different floors to line up? Thats what gave me the most grief.

Looks like some great work. I feel like a dumba**...I have to replace a couple supports on my bed and I was just thinking of bending some sheet metal like the originals, never though of using 2x3 tubing. Great Idea!! Keep the pics comin...

Looks like some great work you have got done I just welded in some patch pannels for the ribs about a month ago and i agree with gee the ribs lineing up is a real pain..

Talking bedfloor progressss

Thanks for all your positive comments! Its a tonne of friggin work but i enjoy it....

So, I am now at the bed front & it was rotten at the two edges & the middle was good. I took pieces from the back of the old bed, bent the edge over & welded them in. the patches were kinda kinda thin in places so i had to do some creative welding that will I'll grind down to an acceptable level. Pic one is of where I drilled out the spotwelds that hold the crosspiece in, & of the ajoinging (sp?) patch.
Pic 2 is of the patch area near the tail light where that one "rib" in the floor gets narrow. I just cut out the right amout of the patch rib to make it the correct width.
pics 3 & 4 are of what the rotted pieces looked like

next post - final crossmember install!

Talking yes, more progressivness

So after patching its final crossmember time! I decided to use the holes I drilled to remove the old spotwelds that held the old crossmember on as the spots where I would "spotweld" the new crossmember on. Lots of clamps were necessary & i even had to use my hydraulic bottle jack to bow the crossmember straight to get it to be a nice tight fit with the bentover edge of the bed. I had to use the welder with lots of heat to make 300% sure that a good bond was made between the deck & the crossmember.
Pics 1 & 2 are of the ends of the new crossmember all installed.
Pic 3 is of the tight fit at the edge! it looks good
pic 4 & 5 are obviously the "done" pics.
I'll soon throw a temporary cheapie coat of black on the welds to slow the rust monkeys & throw it on the truck for storage while I do the bedsides. I still believe that a steel bed is strongest & best for a workin truck, & with the the mods I've made here, I'm thinking the bedfloor will last longer than it did when it came from the factory.

well, its on da truck with a verythin coat of paint. Now its time to start on the bedsides. Oh ya, & while I was there I put in a new urethane trackbar bushing.. Thank you to eveyone for their positive comments - they keep me motivated to continue on with (what seems to be) my never ending project...

hey guyz,
the bedfloor is done & now its bedside time. We got dents & I'm not willing to buy a big money studwelder. What to do? I welded a pile of concrete nails to the dents, ran a die down the shaft of an olde dent puller so that I could put a drill chuck on it & add in a prybar & a jackstand & we have a killer combo. I lie in the bed for stability & my girlfriends dad pushes down on the prybar. It works! I know it looks poor but its a winning combo. What ya think?
