1972 GMC VIN Question
I'm sure this is the millionth question on VINs... but the search function won't let me find GMC or VIN or both together.... so, can someone please help me decode this number?

C = 2wd, E = V8, 3 = 1 ton, 4 = pickup, 2 = 1972, 1 = Oshawa

Your basic 72 GMC 1 ton longhorn vin number T=only used in 1972 to designate a GMC. C=Conventional cab 3=1 ton 4= box so it must be a long horn 2= 1972 1= Oshawa Canada assembly plant

Rod....does the 4 mean fleet or does it just mean it has a bed on it? There was the 9 foot step side built the same as the longhorn...
Just a thought. I obviously still don't know my GMC codes. |

the 4 meant a box. You pretty much need a model number to decode what kinda box..it could be a step side 9 foot box i suppose and after I read it again...it may be. I still think best guess is a longhorn, seeing the Sierra Grande designation there also....lets see what he says.

It's a wideside, with the "longhorn" box on it. The glove box sticker isn't the best, it's scraped off at the model number (CE____4), and it doesn't look like anything was ever filled out in the wheelbase box (except it just has "in" typed in the box)... but it's the 133" wheelbase and has its the original box.
I guess those online decoders work pretty nice without the T in there... Thanks! I don't imagine that this is a very common truck, but it is pretty interesting. And yes, it has the YE9 Sierra Grande package.

Overdrive, Put that Sawzall away and pick up the checkbook! That Sierra Grande needs a restoration! One tons are really cool...everyone and their brother has a lwb C10. There are only a few of us brave enough to pack that extra 6 inches around...LOL!

Hmm frame I've sold..not to many.. have sold a some basically for disc brake swapping to people or they wanted a posi or something like that.
There are two dark blue tow trucks running around that look similar to mine...but there not mine...guy named Don owns them. I believe his son drives one also. They have a regular driver too. I dont drive mine much...and I live east of the peg. There was a black one too but I think its out Brandon way now.

Ahh..ok That was a 71 GMC Super Custom that had the leafs... I took that bracket off that diff thinking I could use it on my 4x4 that had that rear leafs...didn't fit..but never figured where I put it yet.
I have broken 2 of those leaf spring brackets..1 on my 71 4x4 and 1 on my72 1 ton. The 1/2 ton version is not as large radius needed to grab the diff tube...so if your still asking for one it has to be from a 2wd 1/2 ton I figure.

It needs quite a bit of work (mild rust through in rear quarters, typical cab corner rot, paint, interior, and needs some engine work soon, etc), but I'm hoping I can grab it... It does run and drive nice though.
Rod, would you know what kind of price range a truck like this would sell for? I've seen some way over inflated prices a few years ago on 1/2 tons and 4x4's... but haven't paid much attention since I got my C/10 5 years ago, and haven't seen any 1 tons for sale locally to speak of.

Sometimes you gotta back away..after you try fixing a few ..you get to know what its worth done and how much it is to fix. Should be worth a couple "G" at at least.

Well, that gives me sortof an idea. I've seen some listed online in the US in the $1500-3500 American for nice trucks, but needing restoring... good thing they're relatively easy to restore...
I don't think I'd get much for my 1/2 ton in it's disassembled state... though frame and cab are done... this summer better be nice!
