If you have the original, I'd fix that. You're probably going to have to convert to the new R134a freon.

I just finished a Vintage Air install in my Blazer and so far I'm really happy with the fit and finish of it (haven't charged it yet to know how cold, but it blows real hard!). It's fairly stock-appearing under the dash and it really cleaned up the firewall.

My '71 originally didn't have A/C, so the VA unit was an easy decision for me. Had it been an original AC truck, I would have definitely restored the OE unit.

71RestoRod, PICS, PICS, PICS, please. I'm thinking of the same when the time comes.

More than likely just the clutch frose up on the compressor. Put a new clutch on it and get all new O-rings for the lines and squirt some 12 back in it and you'll be set. Converting to 134 will reduce the quality of your cooling and will shorten the life of your system.

Nothing looks as good as the factory type. Since Blazers and pickups are the same in the AC dept I will move this to the 67-72 message board so it gets more responses.

It sounds like most of your original system is there and is good. I would just fix the compressor and what ever else is needed.

You can do all the hard work your self. Just replace the bad clutch on the compressor (or the whole compressor if you chose). You need to order a kit that includes all the O-rings on every line in the system. Not a big deal, just follow every line, and replace the O-ring where ever there is a joint or disconnect (this is only in the engine compartment).

I know, I owned a shop, we would charge $600 or more for this type of job, and all it cost us was maybe $5, plus freon. R-12 has gone through the roof, but the 2# needed to fully charge an empty system shouldn't cost you more than $150-$200. Make sure the shop uses a vacuum pump to draw the system, making sure there are no leaks. Then they can apply the "drug" and your A/C will be blowing 40 degrees F.

I know from experience. If you change from R-12 to R-134, your system and components are made for R-12, and when you ask them to run on R-134, they will work, but not cool ar cold as original, and eventually components will fail, because 134 runs on a higher pressure and will ruin the original r-12 system over time. I would do a R-12 to R134 conversion if requested by the customer, but I would make them sign a release of liability form if the R-134 ruined their system.

anyhow, just replace your pieces and seals, have a shop administer R-12, and you will have a good system for several years.

If you can braze/weld aluminium you can fix it.Otherwise you'll need another evap. core.
