Would you buy it, 69 longhorn?
Well it looks like the 63 I was looking at is sold. However there is a 69 longhorn 3/4 ton at the same lot. The good things, aside from a tailgate it is complete, it has headers for the small block, was converted to bucket seats, and overall it is not in awful shape. Now the bad, rust on the firewall, rocker panel is gone on the driver's side and needs replacing on the passenger's side, rust spots on the firewall, outside trim is not all there, the duct work is hanging down from the dash, the bucket seats are crap(did not feel secure, upholstery half gone and replaced with T shirts, basically all they give me is mounts for newer seats), floorboard rust, cracked block in later year motor that at least I am glad he was honest about(coming in with my badge on may have been a good idea), motor is not original, 2 different pairs of wheels, small creases and dents, bed has a new sheet of metal just thrown in. It needs a lot of work. More so than the 63. But it is still for sale. They want 750 for it. It has potential and I like the odd rear bumper, but it feels like a consolation prize. I really wanted the 63, but am broke until thursday.

that sounds like a 250 dollar truck to me. thats a lot of time and labor to fix the rust if not just get a whole new cab.a not running truck and i would consider anything with a cracked block not running whether it starts up and runs or not it needs an engine. i would pass on that thing. unless you want to spend a hell of a lot of money just to make it safe and roadworthy.

Thanks, I can post pics later. I am not super inclined to buy it. But I am really looking for an old truck. I would probably consider it more if it was say a 51 or even a mid sixties, but I am not as big a fan of the 67-72 as I used to be when I was younger.

I have attached the pics I have so you can better judge. Thanks for the advice so far. I think if it was a shortbed it would be alot harder to say no. I just have to be careful to not let my jonesing for an old truck lead me into something rash.

IMHO, too much rust. If there's that much rust on the outside, imagine what's on the inside (under headliner, floorboards, etc).
If you're looking for a project vehicle and want to look abroad, I spent a lot of time researching vehicles at www.dealsonwheels.com - they have lots of cali and arizona trucks that are generally 'rust-free', but have mechanical issues. I would personally take something with a straight frame and body but a blown engine and/or suspension to fix up than the other way around. Body work is a serious pain in the ass, especially when you're looking at huge chunks missing from body rot. Imagine what the inside of the doors look like on that beast! |

I have pics of the underside. Trust me it is not pretty. But around here rust is a fact of life on most older projects. The caddy I got from Oklahoma is in better shape than most of the older cars I have seen.
I might almost get it if not for the motor. I mean the rust can be dealt with, or the motor for that matter. But put it all together and it is more than I want. I might go that far for a 47-55 or 60-66 or even a 53-56 ford, but not for this one. Funny thing is I used to love the 67-72 more. But as I grow older I like the older trucks more. Thanks for steering me away from this one. |

the only thing I see it has going for it is the fact it is a longhorn. buy the bed sides & emblems & leave the rest.
