Okay I need to replace the rear output seal on my transfer case. Its for my 3/4 ton '79 Pickup. I talked to the dealer and the auto parts store and they said it could either have a 203 or a 205. I could not find that tag on it anywhere that says what size it is. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on how to find out what one it was. I am hoping its the 205.

I bet someone will post pics or something to help you ID the t-case, but if not, remove an inspection plate & peek inside. The 203 will be chain driven, the 205 has gears...

Hey, Thanx Truckstuff that 1st picture you posted looks exactly like what I have and the shifter knob is identical.

usually the sound is different when you are driving it in 4X4 (or is is a full time 4X4) The 205 will have a more "gear" sound (easy for me to say, huh) And the 203 will have a lower pitched louder sound.

Maybe this didn't help as much as i thought when i started typing.

if its factory the auto trucks would have the 203 and the 4 speed trucks would have the 205, but you sig says its got 39s, so factory could be a moot point

I had a message posted earlier. I think we identified my Transfer as a 203. But now having looked at the blue one I think it is just like mine. Where is the cover to check the chain? Maybe I will do that. I have twin sticks. I know I have heard it is impossible to have a 203 with twin sticks. HEre is another picture of the Transfer. Be glad to get some feedback!

definately not a 205, you can identify the 205 by the three bolt intermediate shaft cover between the output housing and the lower aluminum bolt on cover.

That's right, we can twin stick the 203! You get rid of the trouble prone and typically worn out factory shifter box and replace it with 2 levers for much more positive gear selection. One lever will shift the case through Hi-N-Lo and the other will control the differential lock, or on cases converted to part time, the other lever will control 2wd-4wd. This shifter can also be converted to a Doubler shifter with a simple linkage change. Available for GM, Ford and Dodge

Hey guys. Thanks for all the info. RYANROO, I would have never noticed the 3 bolt without your illustration. I am buying a NP205 to replace this. It is already bolted up to a TH350. I bought my truck with some tranny issues. First it was stuck in low. The tranny was rebuilt but it leaks Fluid and it has coated the whole bottom chassis. So probably not going to mess with it. Although I am wondering if I will have to extend or shorten the drive shafts to do the change over. I appreciate any tips on the conversion.
