Yeah, it's me the new guy again; I think this question is different enough to warrant a separate post. For my '72 250 ci I6 I need the duct work that attaches to the exhaust manifold that causes intake air to be heated. I also need a new bimetallic spring for the heat riser. I have looked in about a jillion web sites for this stuff, to no avail. Any one have suggestions? I'd like to drive this thing in the winter.

John, where are you located? I run an open air filter all winter here and have no problems.

I got my duct from autozone in a kit and I had to cut about 4 inches off. Napa may carry the spring. Is the butterfly valve froze open. What problems are you having?
I had to use my heatstove in the winter to avoid carburetor freeze-up,but in the summer I just disconnected it. Welcome too BTW. VetteVet

I'm in Nottingham, NH. The I6 engines had a tin box that wrapped around the exhaust manifold, with some space between it & the manifold, through which intake air can be drawn. The air cleaner has a snorkel through which the intake air is normally drawn. In the snorkel there is a flapper that is operated by vacuum. There is a hose connection also on the snorkel. The hose runs from the hose connection on the snorkel to the tin box. There is a temperature-sensitive valve in the snorkel that controls the vacuum. When the engine is cold, intake air is drawn through the hose that is connected to the manifold, instead of from the open end of the snorkel. As the engine compartment warms up, the valve in the snorkel opens up, to allow un-heated air into the air cleaner.
I need the tin box. Last edited by John Moran; 03-15-2005 at 12:31 PM. |

John
I have a NOS stove pipe for an I6. At least that is what I have been told. I bought it sight unseen from a parts supplier. I had gotten the part number from GM. I thought I was buying a stove pipe for a 402. It wasn't. I posted the number on this board and the feedback was that it was for a I6. If someone can post a pic of what one looks like, I can tell for sure. I paid $25 plus shipping. If you want it make an offer. Wecome to the board. Mark
