Thoughts on gas tank swap?
i was wondering if any of u guys have put your tank underneath the bed where the spare tire used to be. I have a 64 but the frame is the same. I currently have a fuel cell bolted in the bed, but was thinking of putting it underneath. I was wondering if it was easy to do, what kit you would recommend? and does it hang low? my truck is lowered 5 inches in the rear. thanks guys

Strongly recommend the metal tank. There are plastic ones available, don't be tempted.

Don't understand why not poly tank? I've had mine in for a few years now with no problems. My Tahoe came with one from the factory.

That poly tank in your Tahoe is alot better then the poly blazer tanks everyone is selling. I've had nothing but problems with mine and now I switched to a metal tank. I was told by a dealer they cannot take the desert heat so Busterwivell I'm surprised yours is still good.

I've had my poly tank in since April of 02 and have had no problems. Truck is not a "daily" driver but when I need it hauled it'll haul it. (Long as I put gas in, 4:11 gears at 11+ a mile ) Are the replacement metal tanks same gauge thickness as original in-cab tank? Curious, I had purchased an after market Blazer tank from a local parts house and opted to take it back (very thin on the metal) and got a poly tank from GMC Paul. Again, never have had a problem with it.

Put a plastic one in numberoneson's 72. Did a lot searches on the poly tank AFTER we bought it. Problems were leakage when tank was full, water migrating into the tank, tank swelling.
I spent a whole evening repositioning the sending unit until I got it to not leak. I was blowing air into it (not smart if fuel in it, I know) and watching for soap bubbles around the gasket. I had to reposition & resolder the fuel outlet pipe on the unit because the tank bottom had pulled up into itself some and pipe was bottoming out. So far we've not had any problems. We would have if we had just thrown it together. You're right about tanks that come OEM as poly, they are built MUCH better than the stuff we get for these trucks.

I got my poly tank from Wes, I know its been in for 3 years. I don't have problems with it, but don't drive it every day, and when not in use it's in a garage. Where have you guys gotten metal tanks? How much are they?

well, there is a 16 gallon fuel cell in the bed of my truck now, but id rather have it underneath just to clean up the look and maybe get some more traction. do the kits they sell usually have something so you can put the cap in the floor of the bed wood? thanks for all the help guys. One more thing, how low does the metal tank hang? m truck is lowered 5 inches in the rear, so if the tank is more than about 12" tall, i dont think its going to work so good.

I got a tank from a fellow board member and it doesnt hang below my rollpan but it is small. FuelCellGuy makes metal tanks and he can tailor it to your needs at a much better price than what ive seen offered anywhere else. He is a board member and has done tanks for several people here. I pmed him the dimensions of my tank before i bought it and he knew exactly how it would fit, look and the capacity. Nice guy too.

I would suggest Fuel Cell Guy who is a board member. He makes them in aluminum any size you want with baffles, with or without sender. Excellent quality. Mine was about $600 with sender and in-tank fuel pump many months ago.
