I am looking at a 69 Chevrolet (I think its a GMC because of the grill but its advertised as a Chevy. My question is, the owner says it has a 350 with a 4 speed manual. Any ideas on what kind of tranny, are they good, how can i tell if it is a 350 and determine tranny type/#? Also, isn't this rare or did they even make this combo in this year?

I have a '69 3spd tranny in my '68 C-10. The numbers for the tranny are located on the driver's side. There are some pictures of the side plate and the tranny in my signature under "engine swap". I think if the side plate has 7-bolts, it's a Saginaw 3spd synchro'd. Post some pics, someone will tell you.

if its stock, its an SM465 truck 4 speed. although New Process 4 speeds were optional equipment, they are fairly uncommon. check the top cover, if its iron = 465, if its aluminum = NP435.

of course something else could have been swapped in over the years, but as far as stock, the above two are it.

Are both of those good, any major problems. I had a Turbo 400 in my 69 longbed w/350. I rebuilt the engine but never had to touch the tranny. Very reliable to me. This time I want a manual but don't know anything about them.

The M465 is a real strong transmission, very dependable and easy to rebuild. The rare NP435 is also a good/reliable transmission just not as strong.
